We received an update from DVSA on the reforms for the Driver CPC today. The email said; " The reforms include: * introducing a National Driver CPC that will cover driving a lorry, bus or coach in the UK * allowing training courses to be done in blocks of 3.5 hours rather than the current 7 hours to allow greater flexibility * decoupling e-learning from trainer led courses * speeding up the process for drivers whose Driver CPC has run out to return to driving a lorry of bus coach in the UK. This work is still ongoing; these changes aim to be introduced in late 2024 or early 2025 Introducing a periodic test The results from the 2023 consultation on introduction of a test were mixed. We will continue to keep under review the possibility of the introduction of a test." So, not much more than we knew already. But perhaps this might mean we're moving forward on the changes slowly.

New Change’s to drivers CPC given the Green Light On Tuesday 29th October the government, made changes to the driver’s certificate of professional competence (DCPC) training requirements. The amendments included a cut to the minimum length of the training modules from seven to 3.5 hours. However, the length of the entire course remains unchanged at 35 hours. Other changes include the decoupling of e-learning from trainer-led courses and moves to encourage more flexibility in end of module assessments, as well as the introduction of an accelerated pathway for returning drivers. Good morning, I’ve been reflecting on the current landscape of Driver CPC training and wanted to share my concerns about the impact of cheap courses on the quality of education. Some providers offer courses for as little as £20. When you account for the £8.75 DVSA upload fee, that leaves very little to pay the trainer or cover the costs of running a training centre. Consider the significant investment required to: Set up and maintain a training centre. Research, prepare, and write relevant, up-to-date courses. Ensure trainers are qualified, knowledgeable, and adequately compensated. It makes me question whether some of these courses are simply outdated materials being recycled, rather than delivering current and meaningful content to drivers. Driver CPC isn’t just a box-ticking exercise—it’s about ensuring professional drivers are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe and compliant on the roads. Cutting corners on training compromises this mission. As professionals in the industry, we should be advocating for quality over cost and recognizing the value of investing in proper training. Reforms to Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) have come into effect today. Changes include: • Introducing a National Driver CPC that will cover driving a lorry, bus or coach in the UK • Allowing training courses to be done in blocks of 3.5 hours, rather than the previous 7 hours, to allow greater flexibility • Decoupling e-learning from trainer led courses The measure to speed up the process for drivers to return to driving a lorry of bus coach in the UK if their Driver CPC has expired will come into effect on 1 February 2025. #DriverCPCReforms #TransportIndustryNews #DriverTrainingFlexibility #NationalDriverCPC #UKTransportIndustry

Tomorrow (3 December) Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will update the Driver CPC to make it more flexible. Current drivers will have two options to stay qualified: - Take 35 hours of International Driver CPC training every five years to be able to drive in the UK and EU. This is basically, the no change option with IDCPC remaining the same. - Take 35 hours of National Driver CPC (or a combination of 35 hours of National and International CPC training) every five years to be able to drive in the UK. NDCPC will provide flexibility within delivery with 3.5 hour courses and options for e-learning. The “Return to Driving” option will allow drivers with lapsed DCPC’s to start driving again without having to complete all 35 hours straight away. Instead, they will be able to complete a new seven-hour ‘return to driving’ module. They will still need to complete the further 28 hours of NDCPC or IDCPC within 12 months of the module.
