The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan doesn’t want to expand Heathrow with a third runway, whilst the Mayor of Greater Manchester Combined Authority would like Manchester Airport to take the extra traffic needed for London. Meanwhile, London Luton Airport waits patiently as their Luton Rising plans are further delayed, this time until the 3rd of April. Surely the government will back Luton in its quest to serve 32 million people per year and create 11,000 jobs? At the same time, London Stansted Airport, will this year begin its own expansion plans to create 5,000 jobs and double its worth to the economy. Is Stansted willing to put itself forward as a true competitor to Heathrow? Perhaps a future Mayor of Essex, or a Mayor of Norfolk and Suffolk would be as prepared as Mayor Burnham to promote business growth through #airport expansion in their patch? https://lnkd.in/dKBShmwG

A thorough and insightful analysis by David and Pedro that debunks many myths. #Heathrow's third runway will meet the government's 4 key tests of: creating increased aviation capacity, #decarbonisation, noise mitigation and delivering economic #growth to the regions.
Heathrow represents this Government's first major test on growth, precisely because it involves trade offs and difficult choices. For too long Britain has been at the mercy of politicians who dithered and prevaricated. It's refreshing to see real leadership from Rachel & Keir. In a new report for the UK Day One Project, Pedro Serôdio and I identify 15 areas of positive economic impact from expansion. Growth is a choice. But let's get the facts straight: Heathrow expansion is indisputably good for growth. Anyone who says otherwise is relying on flawed economics. All the Govt studies show positive GVA from expansion, and that's before spillovers are accounted for. Heathrow risks losing its status as Europe's pre-eminent hub airport. Amsterdam (which already has 6 runways), Warsaw and Istanbul are all investing heavily to capture growing passenger demand. But ultimately expansion matters because it will deliver for ordinary people across the UK. We calculated that for an average family of four going on a holiday, blocking the third runway means their flights will cost £160 more. Read our full briefing here: https://lnkd.in/eWyKsXAq

The proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport is back on the agenda again, returning like a bad penny for local residents and many politicians. This time lack of capacity isn't driving the desire to have a slab of concrete that wouldn't be finished for a decade or more, rather political expediency. The BBC understands there will be no public money for Heathrow and any of the other projects being announced in the speech which will aim to "kick start" economic growth. The projects to be announced include: · Support to deliver a so-called "growth corridor" between Oxford and Cambridge to boost the UK economy by £78bn by 2035, as well as confirming funding for East-West Rail · Backing the redevelopment of Old Trafford, the area surrounding the football stadium of Manchester United · Environment Agency lifting objections to build 4,5000 new homes as well as schools and leisure facilities around Cambridge · Nine new reservoirs, including the new Fens Reservoir serving Cambridge and the Abingdon Reservoir near Oxford. · Upgrading the A428 in a bid to reduce journey times between Milton Keynes and Cambridge. A third runway at Heathrow would cost tens of billions of pounds and take more than a decade to complete, however, the expansion plans at Gatwick and Luton airports, if approved, are due to start during this parliament. #realestate #construction #keepbuilding https://lnkd.in/efPPWHM5

Today, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the government support for a third runway at Heathrow. While not mentioned in this annoucement, the potential upgrade of the northern runway at Gatwick, which offered an alternative and (I think) easier option will probably be pushed back/cancelled. However, this may not be the end of the story if implementation does not happen at pace and work doesn't start in the coming years. A previous Labour government, under Gordon Brown, had already backed plans for the expansion of Heathrow. Those plans were scrapped by the Conservatives / Lib Dems coallition in 2010 and followed by 14 years of back and forth. In terms of economic growth, the upgrade of the northern runway at Gatwick airport was predicted to generate £1bn/year for the UK economy and create 14,000 new jobs. The third runway at Heathrow could generate £61bn over 60 years (c. £1bn per year) and support the creation of 100,000 jobs. https://lnkd.in/e8_pt5Yu

🛬 Chancellor backs third runway at Heathrow 📈 Rachel Reeves has backed a third runway at Heathrow Airport, a move that could create over 100,000 jobs and potentially boost GDP by 0.43 per cent by 2050. However, doubts have been raised about the compatibility of Heathrow's expansion with UK climate targets. 🤝 Reeves also announced a new partnership between logistics company Prologis Freight and East Midlands Airport to build a new advanced manufacturing park within the East Midlands Freeport zone 'unlocking £1bn of investment and 2,000 jobs at the site' #theengineer #Heathrow #Reeves #runway #growth Read the full story below 👇 https://lnkd.in/egxqUWZ8

The United Kingdom's economy has faced significant decline since the Brexit vote. Despite the Labour government's critical stance on aviation due to environmental concerns, it views expanding London's airports and increasing connectivity as a crucial step to stimulate much-needed economic growth.
The UK Labour government, led by Keir Starmer, is preparing to approve significant expansions at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton airports as part of its push to stimulate economic growth, according to Bloomberg. Plans include a long-debated third runway at Heathrow, full-time use of a second runway at Gatwick, and increased capacity at Luton. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce some of these decisions later this month, emphasizing their potential to bolster the UK’s aviation sector while adhering to environmental obligations. The government plans to mitigate backlash over noise and environmental concerns by highlighting the role of sustainable aviation fuel mandates. 📰 More details on this story in the next issue of the Momberger Airport Information newsletter. ➡️ Sign up for a free two-month trial here: https://lnkd.in/g8SjE2pp Please type "trial" in the user instructions window. #momberger #airports #airportdevelopment #airportoperations #infrastructure #airtransport #construction #ppp #3p #privatization #europe #unitedkingdom #lhr #lgw #ltn #globaleconomy #aviationindustry Image credit: Heathrow Airport

Going for growth... except The majority of the current cabinet supported Heathrow expansion in a 2018 vote and the growth oriented chancellor made positive noises pre the election. Heathrow expansion would be totally a private sector funded endeavour that would enable Britian to continue to punch above its weight not only in aviation, but in many industries that value the global connectivity LHR provides. And the PM noted the hard choices getting growth would entail, e.g. pylons will need to be built in somebody's back yard to enable the energy transistion. Getting a green light is going to be a no brainer then? Except .... the current PM (a London MP) voted against in 2018. Approving a third runway at LHR would kick off a mighty fight with London's mayor and the majority of London MPs. Also the governments green credentials would be further questioned, including from within the cabinet. And any growth beyond construction and beyond London from approving an expansion won't arrive before the next election. Even with the UK governement's "growth agenda", and no public funding required, the third LHR runway seems to be no closer to becoming a reality. https://lnkd.in/dS3VPnhi

🌍 Exciting News for Heathrow Expansion! 🌍 Today the chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves announced the government's support for Heathrow's third runway! 🚀 This decision is aimed at boosting the UK's economic growth by creating over 100,000 jobs and increasing potential GDP by 0.43% by 2050. Reeves emphasised that the expansion is "badly needed" to connect the UK to the world and open up new opportunities for growth. While the announcement has been welcomed by business groups, it has also faced opposition from environmental groups and Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who raised concerns about the impact on noise, air pollution, and climate change targets. What are your thoughts on this development? Do you think the benefits outweigh the potential environmental costs? #HeathrowExpansion #EconomicGrowth #SustainableAviation #UKBusiness #LHR #LGW #LTN #Growth #Aviation #Urbandevelopment #Politics #Airtravel #CAA #Sustainability #BA
