I knew I liked Adam Driver. And there was something more interesting in him than in so many who came before. Anyone who serves a cause lives differently. Anyone who served a cause such as the military? I can think of nothing more fitting for an actor OR for a citizen. To have to think about what your passport is worth? What your flag means to you? What you'd sacrifice for the fine people of your country? When I meet Korean and Singaporean friends who have completed their mandatory national service, they are changed souls. There's something more mature in them. More profound. They have a more commanding presence and hold themselves differently. They talk and think differently. They have an understanding of teamwork and the full force and effect of an ensemble. Personally, I can't relate to their exact experience. But I've led comedy troupes, ensembles, orchestras, and managed 250 employees in difficult daily operations. No, it's still nothing like the military. And yet. I appreciate the spirit of anyone who has served anywhere around the world. As much as I love Bill Hicks, I don't feel he quite understood the military. Or the fact that his country needed the military, or that every country needs a military. For a stand up or a lone ranger or an outlaw to understand the importance of a team? Can be challenging. But an actor is used to the symbiotic organism of a cast and a crew. I ask myself: 'What wouldn't I give for this to be the very best production it can be? Is it even a "sacrifice" if I give myself freely? To serve and protect these ideas. These ideals. This tradition? Is that not service? Are we not in this universe until the bitter-sweet end?' To serve art. And to serve your country. Or to serve any higher order understanding of anything is it's own category of devotion. Some folk die without an intellectual understanding that they will. Some soldiers are drafted and serve and come home, assuming they'll never make it out alive. Our mindsets are everything. Also. To understand how self-expression can help the finest people among us who pledge their allegiance with their very lives? This is noble. Standing armies around the world are forever stricken by issues of post traumatic stress. Who else could relate. THEM and THEM ALONE. So. Self expression. Is the key. To help these fine souls intone the fullness of human expression? To speak with the thundering bellow of a woman or a man who sounds like they would put their very lives on the line for their nation? And who did? For these beautiful women and men to come to terms with what they went through, saw and perceived... In the safe space of theatre? With trusted instructors, a team you can rely on, trainers who care about you and can guide your emotions more expertly than that person who nods at your unfathomable anguish each week in a small room? Well. This is unique. In all of history. What can theatre bring us? So very much. Before, during and after service. To act is to serve.

Two takeaways: Teammates matter - It’s not just about what we do, but who we do it with. Products and services make profits, but people make relationships. Value comes from creative energy - You can assemble cogs into everyday products, or you can innovate and find new vays to create growth and value from otherwise dissimilar concepts.
