If I had to name three people outside of the multiple levels of Government involved with the Vancouver Island Railway that have contributed to the sorry state we are in today, it's Denise Savoie, Alistair Craighead, and Todd Litman. All three names appear in this article in the Comox Valley Record Dec 4th, 2024 - Letters to the Editor "It's time for a fairer balance for those who don't drive." https://lnkd.in/ga28nybr Truth be told, Denise and Alistair have been actively trying to undermine the railway since 2018 through their activities as directors of the non-profit "Friends of Rails to Trails (FORTVI)" that has actively tried to convince people the corridor is better off as a walking and cycling path. Both have refused to debate this issue with me since 2022. Todd Litman is the president of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute (VTPI) and more recently, Better Island Transit (BIT). His work is largely responsible for the McKenzie Avenue proposal to remove 2 lanes of vehicle traffic to create bus only lanes and bike lanes along that corridor. He pushes strong views on how to solve traffic problems, but only so long as they don't involve trains for some reason. He also refuses to debate this issue with me. Despite their aversion to having a cold facts dialog with me, the one piece we can all agree on is that relying on private bus services to deliver inter-city travel on Vancouver Island has repeatedly resulted in failure. Greyhound left, and Island Link Bus doesn't carry children under 9 and charges a private company fee for their services which, despite significant ridership, could disappear in an instant should they be unable to continue services due to profit margins. A Cramlington Town Council Community Chest grant of £500 has been awarded to SENRUG, the South East Northumberland Rail User Group, to help with their funding for the next five years. Their campaign objectives for this time period include : Better bus / train integration, with regular bus services at Morpeth and Cramlington and fully integrated smartcard bus / train / metro ticketing throughout the region. Extensions to the Northumberland Line, a Blyth Town Centre to Airport rail link, upgrading the semi-fast TransPennine Express service between Newcastle and Edinburgh to hourly each way, and defending existing services. "We can’t solve obesity by loosening our belts, and we can’t solve congestion by building more roads" On ABC Radio Perth this morning with Nadia Mitsopoulos, Will Golsby from the RAC WA pointed to new data that congestion is getting worse here. What we need instead of the 'one more lane will fix it' approach: - A bus and train frequency that you don't need to check a schedule for, because one will arrive soon (make the alternatives attractive, frequent and cheaper) - Footpaths, pedestrian crossings, and bike paths for short local journeys - to take two in three car trips off the road, as they could be walked or cycled in 15 mins or less - Where do we get the money? Redirect it from the colossal road budget. Two-thirds of West Australians support this. And of course, we have to stop urban sprawl. Build houses closer to jobs and town centres (reduce the travel distances).
