While this sounds like a good platitude, doing whatever it takes to make an employee happy is a slippery slope long term. I prefer what is said in the longform writing above. Helping employees see their values and objectives in their work is always the best way keep them engaged. We grow jaded to things over time. Those benefits or compensation loses it's luster and then we need more and then more and then more again. Happiness is a choice that we all make and happiness comes from being content with where you are and also knowing where you want to go. Help employees find happiness where they are and give them the opportunity to pursue where they want to go. This will keep the good people around.
