The goal of the Sommeliers Choice Awards is to provide on-premise buyers and sommeliers a valuable benchmark for understanding which wines would make a compelling addition to a wine list. When you look at the US wine market today, one thing is clear: there’s lots of noise. A huge variety of domestic and internationally-produced wine is clamoring for attention. And variety is the key word: there’s California Chardonnay, for example, or natural wines from Greece; there are inky reds from the Barossa Valley and the fashionable breed of pluggable, strawberry-scented Beaujolais, to name just a few of the wine world’s many mouthwatering options. In truth, wine has never been so diverse and confusing. Given the noise, how do you get the attention of savvy sommeliers? The best way is the Sommeliers Choice Awards (SCA). The SCA is specifically designed to recognize those wines that would make a compelling addition to any wine list, so it’s where sommeliers and wine buyers look first when they’re aiming to shake things up.

Helping wineries get more tasting room reservations, online wine sales, & wine club subscriptions through search marketing.
Wineries should think more like salespersons & marketers than winemakers. If you are a winery owner, general manager, marketing director, or marketing manager, your primary role is to sell wine. Right? The winemaker's job is to preserve the quality of the wine during the winemaking process. It is mission-critical. Without it, there's no product to sell. However, their primary job is to obsess about the product, not sell it. So, if you're not the winemaker, you should be thinking like one. So often, I hear these people saying one thing, then see them doing another. --- Winery person: "We want to prioritize selling wine online." Same winery person when I make a recommendation: "We don't want to change our website because we are afraid it will confuse our current club members." - Winery person: "We need to drive more people to the tasting room." Same winery person when I make a recommendation: "We don't want to send a post-reservation email asking for a review." - Winery person: "We want to get more traffic to our website." Same winery person when I make a recommendation: "We don't want to publish this content because it doesn't talk about us enough." --- If any of these sound like you, then you might need to shift your thinking from winemaker to wine sales person & marketer. Often, we say we want one thing and do another unknowingly. To be clear, I am not suggesting cutting corners just to sell a little more this month! Note: If you happen to be doing both, then choose a primary role and accept the reality of that. In what ways do you need to be thinking more like a salesperson and marketer?

Wine Business & Product Development Consultant; Wine Consumer Research; Faculty - Wine Business Napa Valley Wine Academy and Washington State University
I am looking for a winery or wineries to sponsor me and provide wines for two sold-out sessions (about 110 people at each) I am conducting on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024 at the American Wine Society 57th Annual Conference – Winston-Salem, NC. This is an opportunity to showcase wines to a focused audience in a really positive, consumer-first contest. Message, email (tim@timhanni.com) or call me (707-337-0327) if you are interested, THANKS! Why you Like the Wines You Like 1 case each of 4 wines: - Moscato - Sauvignon Blanc - Lighter-style red, Pinot or Gamay - Tannic red, Cabernet, red blend, etc. Match the Wine with the Diner, not the Dinner 1 case each 2 wines - Dry white, Albarino, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc or Gris, etc. - Tannic red, Cabernet, red blend, etc. Title: Why You Like the Wines You Like Presenter: Tim Hanni, Master of Wine: A Pioneer in the Wine Industry Abstract: Have you ever observed that even win experts can have vastly differing opinions about wine qualities and characteristics? Tim Hanni, MW, has created the Perception Project to advance the concept of ‘perceptual individualism,’ which stresses the value of understanding people's individual sensory sensitivities and perceptions. The implications for enjoying and educating about the pleasures of wine and food are enormous. The Perception Project expands an understanding that every human being lives in their unique perceptive and cognitive world and demonstrates that the individual differences in perception from one person to the next can be similar or extremely different. Title: Match the Wine with the Diner, not the Dinner Abstract: Great chefs like Jeremiah Tower (formerly of Stars), Sarah Scott (14 years Executive Chef Robert Mondavi Winery), and Michel Trama (3-star Michelin l’Aubergade les Loges in Bordeaux) are among the many world-class chefs who embrace and practice Hanni’s interactions-based approach to the enjoyment of wine with food. This presentation replaces theoretical wine and food “pairing” with an understanding of primary taste/flavor interactions, while respecting the individual's perceptual sensitivities and preferences. It combines a review of critical misunderstandings of wine and food history, a deep dive into sensory and perceptual sciences, and culinary tips and techniques to ensure the greatest possible enjoyment of wine and wine with food. https://lnkd.in/g9nDWYyH #wine #preceptionproject #rethinkingthewineindustry #wineeducation #AWS #americanwinesociety #wineindustry

Despite all the wine industry’s rhetoric around terroir and how ‘wines are made in the vineyard’, there’s still too much evidence about how systems and processes in the winery are key to the success of a wine. More correctly, while you can’t make great wines from average fruit, the difference between good and great is

September is California Wine Month🍷 Celebrated annually, this statewide event honours the Golden State’s vibrant wine industry. It coincides with the annual grape harvest and showcases the state’s rich winemaking heritage, diverse wine regions, and world-renowned wines. Throughout the month, wineries and wine regions across California host special events such as tastings, vineyard tours, festivals, and wine-pairing dinners. To mark the occasion, here's five lesser known facts about California wine - 🍇 California is the 4th largest wine producer in the world – If it were its own country, California would rank just behind France, Italy, and Spain in global wine production. 🍇 California produces over 80% of U.S. wine – The state’s massive output includes over 4,000 wineries, ranging from small family operations to world-famous vineyards. 🍇 Napa Valley represents only 4% of California's wine production – Despite its fame, Napa’s output is small compared to the rest of the state, focusing more on high-quality wines. 🍇 Wine grapes were first planted in California in the 1700s – Spanish missionaries established the first vineyards, laying the foundation for California’s modern wine industry. 🍇 The "Zinfandel" grape is originally from Croatia – Though widely associated with California, DNA testing revealed Zinfandel’s origins trace back to Croatia.
