Africa's startup ecosystem is experiencing an uptick as the continent's startups are raising more money. There has been a decline in Africa's startup fundraising activities since Q2 of 2023 but Q1 of 2024 has seen a significant uptick with companies raising $360 million in the First three months of this year according to Pitchbook data. One of the most important aspects of #fundraising for your #startup is developing an outreach plan. 📩 Put together a sequence of emails to reach out to your community. Almost ALL startups err on the side of not sending enough emails to stay top of mind. 👉 It can take 7-10 touches or more before someone decides to make an investment.

🎉We closed our oversubscribed 5502 Fund above the €20m target mark🥳 1.5 years ago we started out with the idea to build a fund that would fill a gap we had observed since we started investing as BackBone Ventures in 2018. While many great funds focus on startups once they have proven product-market fit, founders who are just starting their entrepreneurial journey are often forced to gather smaller angel tickets or join accelerators. Moreover, we felt that many of the best founders we had seen in the past were either 1st or 2nd generation migrants or women who had prevailed in male-dominated environments. But while in the past many great funds and angel syndicates had started to focus on women in tech — pre-seed investments in migrant founders mostly had a charitable character. So we decided to raise the 5502 Fund: A pre-seed fund that would lead and fill around 50% of the pre-seed round of underrepresented founders and help them, raise the remaining portion of the round. Full focus on founders in Germany & Switzerland with a sector-agnostic approach. Despite the difficult fundraising environment in 2023 we managed to even surpass our €20m goal and are now fully focused on deploying! To all those startups who are thinking of fundraising, may I be the first to wish them a very Merry Christmas! This time of the year, like pretty much every year, I'm starting to receive a growing avalanche of mails and calls from startups who want to talk about raising a round with us. In numbers: our pipeline has now 35 First Contacts and 28 in Analysis, and by the end of today I will have had 9 first chats with companies seeking funds. My experience tells me that if you start fundraising now you will most likely fail to actually raise a round in the next 3-4 months - sometimes due to lack of clarity in their strategy, but mostly because that's the minimum it takes to raise money. And that takes us to July/August, which is an awful time of the year for fundraising... meaning you will not raise money until after the summer. Naturally, "after the summer" doesn't mean September 1st: it's october at the very least, maybe november - if you're lucky and efficient! But more likely than not, you will end up raising your money by year's end. So hurry up, my dear CEOs! If you want to use this Q3 and Q4 to generate value instead of devoting them to the very stressful activity of late-hour fundraising, you really, really, need to move now.
