Studies have found that work-life balance is linked to mental health in a variety of jobs. A 2021 survey of 2,017 workers by employer review website Glassdoor found that over half felt they had poor work-life balance. Quiet quitting aims to restore balance where work has crept into your personal time. It can also help to separate your self-worth from work. When all you have is work, it is hard not to derive your sense of value from it. Perceived failures at work, such as not getting a promotion or recognition for your achievements, can become internalised as personal failures. This can increase anxiety, making you worry about how to improve your performance. Often, people respond by doing more work, further exacerbating the vicious cycle of overwork and low self-esteem. Quiet quitting could be a "great liberation" in response to the great resignation. People are rejecting overwork and burnout and choosing balance and joy. They are establishing boundaries so their identity and self-value is not tied to their work productivity. Instead of getting nervous at loss of productivity, employers should take advantage of the quiet quitting movement to support the wellbeing of their staff. Workplace lingo like "quiet quitting" and "Great Resignation" has become popular since the pandemic. These new terms provide a way for people to connect over common experiences and challenges. Social media platforms are full of stories about work experiences, ranging from highly positive to deeply frustrating. This trend is more than just a phase; it's a sign of how workers are adapting to changes in the labor market, seeking a balance between work and life, and expressing their dissatisfaction with their work environments. Despite recent layoffs and shifts in company policies, the persistence of remote and hybrid work options indicates that workers have left a lasting impact on workplace culture. Employment trends show that people are increasingly looking for jobs that offer a better work-life balance. The rise of remote work during the pandemic gave many the flexibility to better manage their work-life balance. There's a sweet spot between hustling and "quiet quitting". Leaders seem caught between the impossible demands of wanting the most effort out of their employees while also feeling pressured to offer balance and flexibility to prevent burnout or "quiet quitting." The answer is 85%, says Kristin Lytle, CEO of The Leader's Edge, which is the level of dedication managers can expect because giving 100% all the time is difficult and when employees can't it "doesn't mean they are not contributing and fulfilling their obligations to the team or organization." Put it into practice: Leaders should adopt a more holistic mindset about their employees since many will take work home with them or answer business emails off hours, Lytle notes. Getting to know your employees and their preferred work habits can also go a long way to creating a culture that best fits your workers' talents and career goals, adds Barbara Palmer, founder of Broad Perspective Consulting. #leadershipdevelopment
