I'm excited to share a post from my great friend Giovanni Quaratesi, who is the Head of Corporate Global Affairs at Certified Origins. He recently introduced Greg Ferrara, author of “Authentic Experiences are Good Business for Independent Grocers” in this year’s Certified Origins’ issue of the Global Retail Magazine. While the entire post is insightful, I was particularly struck by the second slide, which states: "American consumers are increasingly interested in knowing where their food comes from. This presents an opportunity for retailers to tell the stories that connect to the product." This statement is absolutely true—though it’s important to recognize that it’s true most of the time. Often, the final customer is more focused on price than anything else. It’s typically those customers with higher purchasing power, who are buying premium products, that pay attention to all the details. However, it’s also possible that even people who need to prioritize economy over quality might still consider these characteristics when making their choices, but this is not common in these cases. The strength of a product clearly lies in its added value—what sets it apart from others in its category. This added value can take many forms: from taste to price (yes, price can be an added value!), to the story behind the product, as Greg Ferrara wisely points out. It could also be the nutritional characteristics, the ethical origin, the terroir, the packaging, the messaging… it all adds up. In any case, all of this needs to be communicated and made available to the final consumer. While the retailer can play a role in this, it’s equally important for the product's producer to do so—to highlight their own value, as they are the true origin of everything. This is what truly adds value to the product. For this reason, products that aim to stand out in the market should work on a series of objectives that, when combined, result in differentiation—all based on their competitive advantage.
📄 Introducing Greg Ferrara, author of “Authentic Experiences are Good Business for Independent Grocers” in this year’s Certified Origins’ issue of the Global Retail Brands Magazine. With the goal to inspire informed decision-making and transparency in the retail industry, this edition features insights from food industry experts, highlighting the importance of understanding food origins. Greg Ferrara is president and CEO of the National Grocers Association, representing independent retail, wholesale, and supplier companies in the supermarket industry. With NGA since 2005, Ferrara has extensive grocery industry experience, having managed his family’s century-old supermarket in New Orleans before it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. 🌿 Join us in promoting transparency and informed decision-making in the food industry and stay tuned for insights from leading experts across various food sectors, coming out in October 2024.
