Gen Z often jokes that moms believe everything they see on Facebook. But honestly, Gen Z isn't all that different. The truth is, we’re more alike than we think, except we believe everything we see on TikTok. OliSUNvia touched on this topic in one of her videos. Here are my thoughts: TikTok is known for its quick, short-form content, with videos that typically last less than a minute. Its users get one minute to look at a piece of information before they move on to the next one. The quick nature of the app does not give people enough time to process the information that is presented to them which leads to passive consumption of information. The problem with this is that people don’t always put in the effort to find out whether something is actually true or not. As TikTok is an audiovisual platform, misinformation can be hard to spot. When we perceive information in this format it’s already being presented to us as real, because we can see it. Sometimes we can identify signs that images have been edited like with the Kardashian photoshop fails. But what about the times that we cannot identify that something is real or not? Especially with the rise of AI… In a world where content moves faster than our ability to fact-check, how can we stay sharp and informed?
