How are you using the High Tilt Accuracy feature on your scanner? I feel like everyone I talk to has a different philosophy on how it "should be used." I have heard the following:
- Only use it on the first scan
- Use it on the first few scans
- Use it on scans towards the center of your project only
- Use it on scans spread out throughout the site
- Use it on every scan
- You don't need to use it
Comment below! I would love to hear what people are doing with it...

I get itchy when folks treat "control" as some sort of magical totem that equals PERFECTION.
Laser Scanning workflows benefit from survey control, 100%. But simply stating "scan using control" or "always use control" misses the means and methods of the control methodology that need to be present.
Personally, I've had a project with the surveyor didn't log their prism constants, and shot my LIDAR targets with either a 0 offset, or a 30mm offset. The only way to figure out which shots were incorrect was guess and check. I ended up throwing out the entire control network and starting over with a new surveyor.
What is the quality of your control? Set using an RTS? How many station setups did it take to traverse into the scanning area? What were the surveyors residuals on their station setups, residuals on the backsights?
Was it even set by competent operator? Loop Closure, or dead end shots? Elevations established Digital Level? When was the last time any of the equipment was calibrated? When was the last time the rod was checked for level?
Fundamentally, sacrificing accuracy or additional self-calibration for field expediency makes me nervous, but that might just be a me problem.

#CCTV is everywhere - literally, everywhere. #VideoEvidence is a common element in many investigations, and especially so, collisions.
The public have literally millions of dashcams patrolling our roads - cameras that not only record whilst moving, but that become temporary static junction cameras periodically.
The ability to integrate video footage with real world data, such as the #3d#pointcloud of an event location, is super valuable. Creating forced projections of the video imagery into the pointcloud allows for a far greater understanding and visualisation of the relative locations in 3D of vehicles, people, obstructions, and their associated pathways through a scene or incident.
While we often think of laser scanning as relevant only for current cases, techniques like these also enable us to revisit historical cases by overlaying pre-existing imagery. The attached video was captured at last year's #ITAI Crash and Research Day at Darley Moor, where of course Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon is the primary event sponsor. As always, we completed post collision 3D #laserscanning of the scene.
As you can see in the video, our in house #guruDaniel Prewitt can help you to complete this powerful workflow within #Cyclone3DR providing you with the skills and confidence necessary to better understand the video captured event in a 3D environment, which in due course, will lead to a better translation of the data led investigation to the lay person - be that the #jury the #coroner the #insurancecompany or indeed, the #bereaved#family
If you would like to know more about #Cyclone3DR and its massive potential to easily deliver powerful and conclusive visuals in #PublicSafety & #Forensics or more about #LaserScanning in general, please feel free to reach out to myself or Daniel Prewitt directly. We have specific "best in segment" courses we can deliver, or alternatively we can supply personalised support based upon your current workflow/issues.
Oh..... watch out for more videos in the near future on this same workflow, but #crime related........and also, see you at The Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators Crash and Research Day on 6th June where we will once again be in attendance as the principle sponsors.
