Some career news. Delighted to say that I have taken up the role of CEO at AGRI3 Fund, a brilliant organisation with a focus on the transition towards sustainable agriculture. For the past 2 decades, my career has been a reflection of the incredible changes happening in the financial markets, particularly in the integration of ESG and impact. From navigating the global financial crisis in emerging markets to advising sovereigns on capital mobilization for SDGs and advising large asset managers and global corporates on climate finance, my journey has been diverse. The climate and nature transition offers a tremendous opportunity to unlock global growth and financial value. Global trade, supply chain shifts, and food security are top-of-mind for many, and now the financial markets are having to navigate these waters alongside climate and SDG commitments. I am excited to be joining Agri3 at a pivotal moment to scale its impact towards transforming agricultural systems. How we farm is at the core of the climate and nature crisis but also plays an important part in the solution. The ability to move the much-needed capital is not just an opportunity of a lifetime - it’s a privilege and a responsibility.

AGRI3 Fund is supporting regenerative agriculture in Brazil. Rabobank has closed a 10-year loan of USD 20 million for Agro São José, with AGRI3 taking a 40% risk participation to enable a longer tenor of the facility. The loan will be used to finance a range of investments related to the expansion of the regenerative practices applied by the group and will support Agro São José with transitioning from a conventional to a regenerative business model. Climate change and sustainable agriculture are two of the most pressing issues of our time, particularly in Africa. The continent’s agrifood sector faces significant challenges, including insufficient access to climate financing and investment. In light of these challenges, a recent strategic partnership between CGIAR Hub for Sustainable Finance (ImpactSF), and ClimateShot Investor Coalition (CLIC) highlighted the opportunity of how such complementing collaborations can help catalyze climate financing and investment toward bankable green transitions on the continent. Our recent blog by Samaa Mufti Daniel Masika Ena Derenoncourt, MBA Harsha Vishnumolakala, and Angela Falconer discusses the key lessons and evidence that demonstrated how innovative science and data-backed financial and investment decision support tools by the CGIAR Hub for Sustainable Finance (ImpactSF) and the entrepreneurial matchmaking ClimateShot Investor Coalition (CLIC) facilitated the connection between agrifood businesses and investors. Through the partnership, investors were able to assess the risk factors and the impact potential of investments, while the SMEs got evidence-based recommendations for practices that improve returns and protect the environment. This is an example of how bridging science and finance can incubate and accelerate innovations and address some of the most pressing challenges in the nexus of agriculture, environment, and food security in Africa, helping it overcome the challenges posed by climate change. Additionally, Ann emphasizes the importance of leveraging Digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (DMRV) systems to streamline the registration and certification process, addressing the challenge of slow adoption of digital technologies. One of Ann's most memorable experiences in her journey of promoting carbon market initiatives involves working closely with farmers to encourage the adoption of improved farming practices. Through carbon finance, she has witnessed firsthand the tangible results of increased yields and improved soil health, showcasing the transformative power of sustainable agriculture. Looking ahead, Ann envisions a future characterized by enabling policy environments, with governments actively crafting policy frameworks to support the growth of carbon markets. She stresses the pivotal role of active participation from all stakeholders in shaping the market, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among ecosystem players to create meaningful incentives for collective action.
