We are proud to support the green transition of Morocco's mining sector with a €13.6 million loan to PROCANEQ! This investment will finance the purchase of energy-efficient equipment, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. Additionally, our funding will promote gender diversity by encouraging the employment of women machinery drivers in this traditionally male-dominated industry. Together, we are driving sustainable growth and empowering change.

What does the #IDWIM2024 theme mean to you? Today we highlight #IDWIM2023 campaign ambassador Nompumelelo Zikalala from #southafrica who said: “I believe that as women, we are mining, we belong, and we also play a role in the progression of this critical industry. There has been good momentum in bolstering initiatives of inclusion and representation within the industry. Historically, women have been under-represented in the mining industry, and although there’s still a lot to be done, women in SA in 2024 occupy 15% of the 475,000 workforce according to the Minerals Council South Africa.” As the Chief Executive Officer at Kumba Iron Ore, she also added that: "At Kumba, our women in mining strategy promote the integration of women in the workplace, particularly in core functions with women in core mining representing 23% of our people in 2023." We'd love to hear from you! It was a privilege to share my research and policy expertise on mining regulations, smart innovations and climate change sustainability in Africa at the recent Women in Mining Training Institute (WIMTI) with the theme: 'Policy Evolution for Growth'. The event was held on Thursday, 19th September 2024 and brought together women from different areas in the mining sector to brainstorm and share their knowledge and experience on integrating gender equality and improving women's participation in the African critical minerals sector. My presentation titled - 'Roadmap for Sustainable Development of Africa’s Critical Minerals Utilising Clean Energy, Sustainable Climate Practices and Smart Innovations' - explored innovative ideas for integrating climate sustainability in the critical minerals sector through the "RIEP" Formula within a Holistic framework. The "RIEP" formula focuses on Reforming the legal and regulatory framework, Incorporating Clean energy and Smart Innovations, Embedding transparency and accountability of Stakeholders and Promoting gender and social equality in the critical minerals sector in Africa. I look forward to exploring further ways of improving the regulation of the critical minerals sector in Africa, focusing on embedding gender equality and women's participation in Africa's mining sector.

Research & Innovation Officer @ Zimbabwe School of Mines | Mining Governance | Mining Law | Public Policy | Artisanal and Small Scale Mining
A #humancapital development approach to the #formalization of the #asm sector involves extensive training, capacity building, and support to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals engaged in mining activities. This approach is crucial for empowering miners, especially women, and improving the overall productivity and sustainability of the sector. Training institutions play a vital role in replicating this approach by providing specialized training programs tailored to the needs of #asm miners. Training institutions can replicate the human capital development approach by focusing on skilling, reskilling, and upskilling initiatives. These programs should cover a wide range of topics essential for #asm activities, such as safety and environment management, mining legislation, efficient mining techniques, mercury abatement, gender equality, financial literacy, and more. By offering comprehensive training on these subjects, training institutions can equip miners with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate effectively within the formal mining sector. Moreover, training institutions need to collaborate with key stakeholders like governments, private sector actors, and NGOs ActionAid Zimbabwe Hivos Oxfam World Vision Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association Pact to ensure the success of formalization efforts in the #asm sector. Partnerships between training institutions and organizations like the Zimbabwe School of Mines can enhance the inclusivity of training programs and provide miners, especially women, with the tools needed to actively participate in the mining value chain https://www.zsm.ac.zw/

Innovation and improvement are best driven by diversity in experiences, mindsets, and cultures. That's why the minerals industry is working hard to ensure equal opportunity for everyone. The IMII is proud to support this initiative, and has invested over $1.3 million to date in diversity and inclusion programs. From STEM+ to Diggin' Digital Boot Camps to Gender Equity in Mining (GEM), we are working hard to make a difference. More information on our linked site. In addition, we have been pleased to see various DEI initiatives and opportunities introduced by minerals companies and community organizations: ◾ Morris Interactive's Digital Transformation in Potash Mining Program, a 10-week course designed to equip Indigenous students with the competencies needed for a meaningful career in mining. https://lnkd.in/gv_djtvv. ◾ BHP's Jansen's mine site and Saskatoon corporate office workforces are 43% women. They set this goal in 2016, and have become the first BHP location in the world to reach it! https://lnkd.in/g75tARJW. It is a privilege to work with the Saskatchewan minerals community to build a diverse, inclusive industry. #Innovation #Diversity #Inclusion #MiningIndustry #Minerals #FutureOfMining #MiningInnovation
