There is very little time left to apply for this year's round (for Oct 2025 entry) for Commonwealth PhD studentships. These PhD studentships provides a full stipend, tuition fees (up to £18,000 per annum (as is the case with some other universities, Loughborough will cover the difference as per our agreement with the Commonwealth Office), Airfare, Study travel grant (where appropriate), Provision towards fieldwork (where appropriate). Applicant eligibility is detailed on the Commonwealth website, however candidates must be from an eligible country; Bangladesh, Cameroon, The Gambia, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Zambia. Candidates will require a supporting statement, in PDF format, signed and either on institutional letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details, from a proposed supervisor in the UK from at least one of the institutions named on the application form.  Deadline for submitting an application is 16:00 hours BST (15:00 GMT) on 15 October 2024. The scholarships are for study in the UK beginning in October 2025. There are three types of nominator invited to participate in the PhD scholarship programme:  National nominating agencies – this is the main route of application. Selected universities/university bodies – which can nominate their own academic staff. Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies. Each nominator oversees its own selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria. Applicants must check with the nominator for their specific advice and rules for applying, and their own eligibility criteria.

Excellent News for Future Student Researchers! Budget 2024 proposed significant new investments to increase the value and number of scholarships and fellowships for master’s and doctoral students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, that are funded by Canada’s federal granting agencies – the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced that students receiving scholarships and fellowships from the funding agencies will see increased award values take effect as of September 1, 2024. This means that the annual value of all current and new master's and doctoral student scholarships will increase to $27,000 and $40,000, respectively, and current and new postdoctoral fellowships will increase to $70,000. This is a significant boost for future researchers and reflects Canada's commitment to fostering great minds in various research fields. So, I began my PhD studies in 2022, the very year I was supposed to be graduating had it not been the Covid-19 pandemic circumstances. Here I give a personal account of my 3 years of resilience to secure admission and fully-funded scholarships for my doctoral studies at top universities in Australia and the UK. Briefly, I graduated as the top Master's student with a High Distinction (CGPA 3.95 out of 4.0) in MA Conflict Resolution in Turkey (May 2019), complementing my earlier first-class undergraduate degree in Politics and Public Management from Zimbabwe (December 2015). By mid-2019, I had developed a compelling PhD research proposal and secured expert supervision from Professors at two prestigious Australian universities, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and RMIT University. After submitting my admission and scholarship applications to both institutions, UTS issued out a successful offer on November 26, 2019. The comprehensive offer, encompassed the 2020 International Research Scholarship and 2020 UTS President's Scholarship, amounted to an approximate value of US$ 150k. Despite UTS being the first to offer, I prioritized waiting for RMIT University and chose to defer the UTS offer from enrolling between Jan - March to mid-2020. Shortly thereafter, in mid-March 2020, the emergence of Covid-19 as a pandemic triggered the closure of international borders, including those of Australia. As I anticipated, also RMIT University granted me admission and a scholarship offer (RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship) on May 15, 2020, valued at a minimum of US$ 170k along being encompanied by my family (spouse & kids). Initially set to start in October 1, 2020, my commencement date was automatically deferred to July 2021, a delay of 14 months, owing to the impact of Covid-19. During this period, I finally opted to forgo my UTS offer in favour of the RMIT opportunity. July 2021 brought an unexpected twist due to the third wave of Covid-19, causing continued indefinite closure of Australian borders. RMIT University notified me that my offer lapsed, leaving no guarantees for another. I was struck to the core, almost two years of hope was shuttered just like that! Despite devastation, support from my fiancée and others provided solace. Back to zero, an unexpected setback. Embodying the name "DrUnstoppable," I pursued the UK pathway, securing supervision from renowned Professors at the University of Manchester and University of Glasgow. By early 2022, I had offers from both, awaiting scholarship outcomes. In Dec 2021, RMIT opened applications, prompting me to strengthen my application for fully-funded scholarships amid intense global competition. In July 2022, I received a merit-based offer for admission and a scholarship to pursue my PhD at RMIT University in Australia again. COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS INFORMATION SESSION WITH DR. MBM As a privileged three-time Commonwealth Scholar, I decided to parnter with the Global Commonwealth Scholarship Alumni Body to promote the Commonwealth Masters and PhD Scholarships (which will close on the 15th October, 2024). QS Rankings by Subject 2024 released. The 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject have reconfirmed Australia’s position as a world leading study destination, with nine Australian universities ranked in the top 10 globally across 17 different subject areas. Global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds have now released the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject. This year’s rankings provide an independent analysis of more than 16,400 university programs offered by more than 1,500 universities located across 95 countries and territories. The programs analysed for the 2024 rankings cover 56 different ‘subjects’ (areas of study) in five broad faculty categories: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management. Overall, nine Australian universities featured in the world’s top 10 rankings across 17 different subjects (study areas), three more than last year. Four Australian universities are in the top 10 universities worldwide for having the most top 100 entries across all study areas. Within that top 10 list, two Australian universities beat all other universities worldwide with their number of top 100 rankings across the entire 56 subjects (areas of study) analysed: The University of Melbourne (53 study areas) and The University of Sydney (52 study areas). Three other Australian universities ranked in the top two globally for individual study areas: Curtin University (Engineering – Mineral and Mining); Monash University (Pharmacy and Pharmacology) and The University of Queensland (Sports-related subjects). Monash University also featured in the top 100 globally across 45 different study areas, while The University of Queensland featured in the top 100 for 43 study areas. With the recent Migratory Advisory Committee and Office for Students reports into international higher education and its affordability, the funding model of UK universities is in the spotlight. Universities are over reliant on (international) student fees, which could lead to devastating consequences. I believe there is another option. Universities need to radically rethink how they approach research commercialisation, which is a significantly underexploited opportunity. Doing so could help balance books, empower science, and help save universities. Higher Education World A NATION OF DOCTORATES PhDs for everyone will not improve academia Ever-expanding numbers of doctoral students may suit universities, but one’s twenties should be a time for broad learning and professional development, not for burying oneself in detailed research, says Lincoln Allison How many PhD holders do you think there are? According to Lincoln Allison, the number of people with doctorates is growing to the size of a “doctoral nation”. In the US alone, 4.5 million people have the qualification, double the number in 2000 and equivalent to the population of Scotland. As more and more people gain doctorates, is it time to ask if the move towards PhDs is the right one? Allison also wonders if, in more personal terms, it is good for people in their twenties to be “perpetual students”, suggesting that this should be a time for broad learning and professional development, not for burying oneself in detailed research.
