As an organisation, our entire framework is based around Social Justice and guides our approach to the work that we do. We recognise that social justice is crucial for the achievement and maintenance of peace, security, and upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms for every individual. On this #WorldDayofSocialJustice2024, we find ourselves at a crossroads. On one hand, we yearn for a world with peace and free of conflict. On the other hand, disparities and injustice still plague our societies and threaten to pull us further apart. In advocating for peace, we must recognise that social justice is not just an idealistic dream but a practical path towards creating a more peaceful world. It is interconnected with pursuing fairness, equity, and harmony. Here's why: 1. Injustice Breeds Resentment: When individuals or groups are systematically denied their fundamental rights and opportunities, it leads to resentment. This resentment can grow into frustration, anger, and conflict. Social justice tackles these issues at their root, addressing discrimination, marginalisation, and unequal access to resources. By creating a system where everyone feels valued and empowered, we can remove the seeds of discontent that fuel discord. 2. Building Bridges, Not Walls: Justice goes beyond borders and identities. When we stand up for the rights of all, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or beliefs, we promote empathy and understanding. This helps to bridge the gaps that divide us and lays the foundation for lasting peace. The power of solidarity and collective action in achieving shared goals has been demonstrated by social justice movements throughout history, reminding us that true peace cannot be achieved at the expense of the marginalised. 3. Investing in Peace: Social justice is not just about dismantling injustice but also about committing to a future where peace is not just an aspiration but a tangible reality. This can be achieved through providing equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. It demands establishing reliable legal systems that uphold the rule of law and protect the vulnerable. It necessitates investing in conflict resolution mechanisms and promoting a culture of dialogue and understanding. 4. It empowers individuals and communities: When individuals have the tools and opportunities to thrive, they become agents of positive change. Empowered communities are more resilient and less susceptible to manipulation, exploitation and conflict. No doubt, the path to peace is complex and multifaceted, yet social justice remains one of its critical components. Today is World Day of Social Justice, a day to promote equal rights and opportunities for all people. This year's theme is "Global Coalition for Social Justice: Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances". It calls for international collaboration and solidarity to address the social justice challenges that affect millions of lives, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Social justice is not only a moral duty, but also a key driver of inclusive growth, innovation, and peace. We can draw inspiration from the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching, which guides us to live out our faith in action and apply this in all the work we do for a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world. I was thinking at the gym that the issue with a lot of cooperatives (or even with the most organised form of this unions) is that they don't always have nuanced democratic mechanisms. From what I can see unions are not that democratic (democracy is so much more than majority rules and being trained in techniques understand this). Without nuance we still end up with the loudest most dominant voice being all that is heard. This is one reason why we end up with corruption in unions. It is not so much the people; it is the stage. I can bring help with this through Paradigm Change CC&C with the cooperatives I work with in Earth Temple. I can offer a Cert IV in Community Development. I want to check out if I can talk to someone in Australian Foreign Aid as to how I get funding to do something like this. The ALP is going to struggle into the future if they don't incorporate participatory and deliberative democracy tools. I promise I won't say I told you so. It will be hard to properly engage people in change until you change the structure which is very possible.

Grassroots Movements: The Heartbeat of Peacebuilding Civil society organizations and NGOs are at the heart of peacebuilding efforts. These grassroots movements mobilize communities, advocate for human rights, and provide essential services in conflict zones. Organizations like Peace Direct work directly with local peacebuilders to support their efforts in preventing violence and resolving conflicts. By empowering local communities and amplifying their voices, civil society organizations are essential in creating sustainable peace.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day of freedom and reflection. Mediation can help address social injustices and build stronger, more equitable communities.
