We began this week with a deeply insightful panel discussion on measuring the prevalence of #childprotection issues worldwide, organized by Athena Infonomics in collaboration with Global Evaluation Initiative. The session brought together experts from various organizations to share their experiences and insights on measuring the prevalence of child protection issues. The discussion highlighted the importance of accurate and reliable data in designing effective interventions and shaping strategies to combat crimes against children. The panelists — Rohan Singh, Michael Joseph, Timothy Edgemon, and Anupama Ramaswamy — discussed the complex and evolving nature of child protection issues, the need for collecting prevalence data and information on drivers and enablers, and the gaps in existing data sources, especially for hidden populations. They introduced innovative approaches for measuring data, emphasized engaging survivors and people with lived experiences in research to provide valuable contextual insights and mitigate biases, and highlighted the critical need for using age-appropriate, creative methods that ensure a safe space for sharing experiences and perspectives while working with children. The webinar underscored the need for collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and the community to develop and implement innovative approaches that effectively measure the prevalence of child protection issues. By sharing knowledge and experiences, we can work towards generating reliable data to inform policies and interventions that protect children from violence and exploitation. Our heartfelt gratitude to all our speakers and participants for contributing to this vital conversation. Together, we can create a safer world for our children. See the outcomes from our first Design Dialogue workshop 👉 https://lnkd.in/gvZTZyWE We are in the process of designing an alternative to the existing out-of-home care system, which is consistently failing our kids. Vulnerable children and young people need a child protection and OOHC system that puts real relationships at the heart - a Child Connection System. At our first Design Dialogue day, held in December, we brought together people with extensive and diverse experience in child protection and OOHC. This is just the beginning. We are continuing to engage with stakeholders through meetings and surveys. We recently published a summary of our first wave of engagement here 📝 https://lnkd.in/gGQaXx3S and we're looking forward to a second Design Dialogue day this month where we further develop potential solutions and identify what we can all do to push change. We know we haven't heard all the voices yet. There are many people and groups doing crucial work to drive change. We want to collaborate as widely as possible. Stakeholder input, along with the voices of children and young people in OOHC, will guide our work on how to transform child protection and OOHC into a Child Connection System. ➡ Join the Centre for Relational Care to show your support for a Child Connection System and keep up-to-date on progress https://lnkd.in/gNANX-f3 ➡ Share your story: If you are a young person in care, a family member of a person in care, or are working in the care sector, your stories can help show why Australia's system of OOHC needs fixing. https://lnkd.in/gz6MhZn9 ➡ Contact us to learn more, or to become involved yourself. https://lnkd.in/geTTcEfK #childconnectionsystem Simon Goodrich Callan Rowe Sue Izmir Vafa Ghazavi Hannah Lobb Jordan Taylor

📢 Change of date: Due to unforeseen circumstances, our Live Learning session on “The Australian Child Maltreatment Study - implications for safeguarding practice” with Professor Darryl Higgins has been rescheduled. The new session time is Friday 31 May, 10.00am (AEST). You're invited to join us on 31 May to unpack findings from the groundbreaking Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) with Director of the Institute of Child Protection Studies at ACU, and chief study investigator, Professor Daryl Higgins. The findings from the ACMS expose the shocking extent of child maltreatment, dispelling the belief that it occurs only once, or that its effects diminish over time. Child maltreatment is preventable – but it requires coordinated action. The ACMS data can guide our investments in evidence-based prevention and response initiatives, enabling us to take strategic action. Register for the 31 May session here: https://lnkd.in/gfdcwbeb

Today we published our Annual Report and Accounts for 2023 to 2024. The publication summarises the YJB’s achievements, contributions and use of public funds, as we continue to drive up standards across the youth justice system, focusing on what works and seeking to replicate good practice. Our evidence-based approach, and significant achievements over the past year underscore our commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable children, their families, victims, and communities. This builds on the successes over the last decade, where we’ve seen reductions in first-time entrants, the numbers of children in custody, and reoffending rates. While these reductions are welcome, we are concerned by the inability of the current secure estate to meet the very complex needs of vulnerable children, and the re-offending rates which remain stubbornly high. Annual reports and accounts are, by their nature, focused on the past, so we must also acknowledge the tremendous challenges currently facing children in the justice system. Despite these challenges, our resolve to understand what is happening across England and Wales, to implement the evidence base, to support ministers, youth justice services, and the system to drive improvements is unwavering. We’d like to extend a huge thanks to all those working across the youth justice system, including YJB staff, for your continued efforts and commitment for more prosperous futures for children, victims and society, in what are incredibly challenging times. "Expert Technical Feminist Batwoman" currently serving as Global Lead for Protection Policy and Advocacy at International Rescue Committee
In November, governments have an opportunity to make catalytic pledges to make all childhoods safe everywhere - in communities, households, schools, and online. IRC is asking governments to capitalize on that opportunity, to include children living in conflict, crisis, and displacement, and to recognize that caregivers need support if they are to support children and keep them safe.
