I have a lot of thoughts about remote work and why it's probably the most powerful tool for whichever industrial revolution we're in now, but I want to focus on one particular argument I hear a lot right now: that remote work is somehow deleterious to the growth of the so-called younger generation. The thrust of the argument is, all of us who have been in the professional world for a while can work just fine remotely, because we know the game and how to play it, but the freshers will suffer for being left behind by peers and managers who can't guide them. I dunno, sounds like a skill issue to me. Maybe instead of hiding behind your juniors and their very real and valid need for guidance, you should learn how to guide them better. I mean, the argument basically boils down to "I don't know how to work effectively in the current paradigm," which is exactly what you're accusing younger workers of when you say remote work is bad for their growth. Rather than drag everyone back into the office because senior employees don't know how to be good mentors unless they're standing in front of a water cooler, let's all try to be better senpai. Embrace the power of simply talking to your peers- there are a lot of really convenient ways to do that now. Instead of prescriptively assuming that they need the same things you would if the roles were reversed, engage with them and learn how to teach them. But don't use them as an excuse for not wanting to adapt to the world we're living in. We're all going to have to adapt to the professional world we find ourselves in, junior and senior alike. #remoteWork #mentorship #remote #noExcuses #growth #howCanIHelp #genZ #itsTheirWorldToo #hashtagsAreHard #howDoISocialMedia #noticeMeSenpai

With another graduation season behind us, a new wave of junior employees will soon be joining the workforce, many starting their first 9-5 job in a remote setting. A recent Harvard Business Review article offered up some great advice for helping entry-level workers navigate remote work challenges like isolation, distractions, and communication gaps.
