The Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg is delighted to invite you to attend our Summer Show 2024 exhibition opening on Thursday, 28 November 2024 at 17:30. The exhibition will run from 28 November until 6 December 2024. Graduate School of Architecture Summer Show (2024) - Attitude “Attitude" is not just a stance or posture but a dynamic orientation—one that is internally motivated implying both direction and purpose. We continuously adjust and refine our trajectory as we navigate through the complexities of contemporary architectural production and discourse and the contested social and cultural landscapes of South Africa, the Diaspora and the wider world. "Attitude" also conveys a sense of distinctiveness—our commitment to offering alternative ways of approach, of thinking, being, and working in the world. This is not simply a matter of opposition but of presenting a critical and passionate response to the contexts we engage with, both locally and globally. The transformational attitudes that permeate our work shape modes of practice that are reflective, evolving, and deeply engaged with the critical challenges of our condition. As we explore what it means to navigate architectural education in a time of constant change, "Attitude" symbolises our orientation toward innovation, critical inquiry, and a commitment to reshaping architectural knowledge and practice. Our approach may not always follow a defined or an orthodox path, but it is driven by a deep passion for discovery, critical reflection, and the pursuit of transformative possibilities. This year, we take a bold step in furthering our commitment to evolving practices, interrogating new forms of spatial production, and questioning established boundaries. In doing so, we continue to position ourselves with a clear focus on creating futures that are imaginative, equitable, and impactful. Date: Thursday, 28 November 2024 Time: 17:30 – 20:30 SAST Location: GSA, JBS Park, 69 Kingsway Avenue, Johannesburg Kindly RSVP using this link: https://lnkd.in/gHxSSfwF NB: Please bring a form of identification (ID, Staff ID, or Driver’s license) for JBS Park security. #unitsystemafrica #happeningatthegsa #summershow2024 #gsasummershow #architectureexhibition #architecture #interiordesign #firstthursdays #exhibition #architecturepostgraduate

Towards a Circular Architecture in Olympic Venues.
"It is time to take bold collective action towards circular architecture to accelerate the socio-ecological transition. With this goal in mind, The Montréal Olympic Park is launching an international idea competition to reuse and valorize the components of the roof of the Olympic Stadium, an emblematic building in Québec and architectural icon on a Canadian scale. What can be done with hundreds of tons of materials when the current roof of the Montréal Olympic Stadium is dismantled? Will we be able to take up the challenge of this Olympic roof reuse, while being part of a circular architecture approach, thus enhancing the quality of life of citizens impacted by climate change? The international design and architecture communities, both students and professionals, are invited to propose spaces, objects and processes that will constitute an important legacy for our city and for the Province of Québec..." What an amazing initiative!!! https://lnkd.in/eYYkg9gY #tensinetassociation #membranestructures #circulareconomy

Can we build a future that honors our past? 🤔 Our latest video reveals a remarkable example of historic preservation in action in Brussels. #GrowWithMonitoring #MonitoringSolutions Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon Jan De Nul Group
Preserving historic architecture is a privilege and a responsibility. At Jan De Nul Group, they understand this deeply. That's why they're utilising Leica Geosystems monitoring solutions in their construction work nearby Brussels' iconic South Palace built in the 1800s. This approach allows for the precise monitoring required to protect this historic building while advancing the city's subway infrastructure. Thank you, Jens Muylaert, for sharing insightful details about this fascinating project with us. The Habitat Research Center is celebrating the publication of Architecture revalued. #Baukultur and the culture of Transition published by The EPFL Press with a drink at the Montreux Jazz Café EPFL on Tuesday 3 December 2024 from 4.30 pm, in the company of the contributors. This moment will be an opportunity to conclude a wonderful collaboration between six ENAC faculty laboratories since the first interdisciplinary seminar organised on the topic in March 2022. Please let us know if you are coming by e-mail: Valentin Bourdon valentin.bourdon@epfl.ch The notion of Baukultur marked a fundamental step towards a comprehensive definition of the built environment. The idea that landscape, architectural heritage, and all the existing built context could converge to portray the richness and complexity of our habitat now points to a collective and strategic approach to design. In this perspective, the value of architecture arises essentially as a tool to convey the emerging culture of Transition within the existing Baukulturen. Architecture revalued structures a theoretical framework around these concepts leaning on the research, design, and pedagogical experiences of six architectural and urban design practices/academics, as specific readings and valorization of the existing built environment. Three essays articulate the ongoing debate, and a manifesto enunciates the basics of a common discourse on Baukultur and the socio-ecological Transition. The EPFL Press EPFL Architecture EPFL ENAC

I'm such a huge fan of Leonardo da Vinci science and Goethe science! In the old days, engineers were holistic thinkers who had a huge fascinating for nature. Things like lifting heavy weights with leverage instead of heavy machines were normal because everything had to be done by hand. In my first job in the Amsterdam removal company we had a lot of that too. So, what would Leonardo say to modern architects? 1. Think as lightweight as possible 2. Think minimum materials 3. Think interconnection instead of solids 4. Think structure and shapes for function and beauty!
The Da Vinci Bridge 🌉, dreamed up by Leonardo da Vinci , stands on its own without extra support . It's like a big arch that holds itself up 🏛️. Each stone in the bridge works together, pushing against the others to keep everything steady 🏗️. We still can do better: look at this: https://lnkd.in/eX4gwHKa This is a self-supporting structure that permanently stores the energy for future use. The structure is based solely on bending and friction, without fixed connections, identical to the Leonardo bridge.

Excited to contribute to the fall issue of Statyba ir architektūra (Construction and Architecture), Lithuania's leading architecture magazine! The issue focuses on 4 R's - Repair, Renovation, Reconstruction and Restoration - and I share my perspective on sustainability in architecture, emphasising the need to rethink new construction in light of the growing climate crisis. Thank you, Aušra Nyman, for this opportunity and thought-provoking questions. For the full article and the complete issue, check out the links below: https://lnkd.in/d668cFrX https://lnkd.in/dMNjuJFp
