In the beginning... back in 1995, we had Java... at some point when version 1.2 was released in 1998, the name of the Java programming language was changed to 'Java 2'. At that time, it was common to use Java in three different versions: Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE), Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME), and Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). After several years, the '2' was taken away. However, most people continued to use the acronym J2EE. On September 12, 2017, Oracle handed over Java EE to the Eclipse Foundation. Java EE was renamed to Jakarta EE. Jakarta EE continued to evolve. Check out Buhake Sindi talk @XtremeJ on Tuesday next week (April 2, 2024). Become familiar with Jakarta EE. Don't stay behind. Java is dead, long live Java! .. more or less Java EE is out. JEE, Java 2EE, J2EE, Jakarta EE? Actually, these are all different names for the same thing: a set of enterprise specifications that extend Java SE. Since Oracle gave the cookie to the Apache Foundation in 2017, we have Jakarta EE. This because the rights to "Java" are owned by Oracle and at the same time it is still "JEE", just that J stands for Jakarta. Currently at version Jakarta EE 10. So should we continue to use JEE? If I could make the choice, I would not. Frameworks such as Spring Boot are moving faster and have after so many years enough maturity for large enterprise projects. Spring Boot is much easier to use and you can have developers up and running much faster. The learning curve is also not very steep, especially for experienced JEE developers. And a special mention to Quarkus, if you want something novel and need to build quick and run fast with containers. Maturity is not up there yet though. Did you know, SMEs are rewriting their old JEE code? Are you in the same situation? Contact me, my company can help. #java #jee #spring #licencing #legacycode
