Last week, Marissa Peretz, founder of Silicon Beach Talent, and Eclipse Partner Charly M. hosted a recruiting/talent roundtable focused on empowering startups in traditional industries to build exceptional teams. Key takeaways from our discussion include: ➡ 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: CEOs need to take a major role in the early days. HR or people leaders can't forge a transformative culture alone. ➡ 𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲: Recruit intellectually curious people. They offer deeper problem-solving skills and a passion for continual learning, which is essential for startups. ➡ 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞: Use unprecedented industry changes as a recruiting tool. Highlight the opportunities for innovation and growth that big companies might lack. ➡ 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬: Make the recruitment process unforgettable. Give candidates a taste of your company's culture and potential with factory tours and product showcases. ➡ 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Ensure candidates leave with a positive, lasting impression, even if they don't join. Will they speak highly of your company and its process to their friends? Thanks to everyone who attended! Contact Lilyann Colton if you’re interested in future events for startups focused on transforming physical industries.

Attracting top talent to your startup can be challenging, especially when competing with larger, more established companies. To stand out, offer a compelling vision and a sense of purpose that resonates with potential hires. Many top professionals are drawn to startups because they want to work on innovative projects that have a meaningful impact. Equity compensation, flexible work arrangements, and opportunities for personal and professional growth can also be strong incentives. Create a company culture that values collaboration, innovation, and autonomy to appeal to high-performing individuals. Finally, make sure your hiring process highlights the unique opportunities and growth potential your startup offers, positioning it as an exciting alternative to corporate roles. www.techsurge.com.au

From Rushed Recruiting to Strategic Scaling: The 'First Who, Then What' Revolution #FirstWhoThenWhat #JimCollins #StrategicHiring #StartupGrowth #TalentManagement #TeamBuilding #CompanyCulture #ScaleUpStrategy #LeadershipInsights Mark, the founder of a promising startup, was eager to scale quickly. He was about to make several quick hires to fill key positions when his mentor reminded him of Collins' "First Who, Then What" principle. Changing his approach, Mark decided to slow down the hiring process. He focused on finding the right people who aligned with the company's values and had the potential to grow with the organization, rather than just filling positions based on immediate needs. This meant turning down some seemingly qualified candidates and leaving positions open longer. But once he had the right team in place, decision-making became easier, productivity soared, and the company was able to adapt quickly to market changes. Getting the right people on board is more important than having a detailed strategy. With the right team, you can figure out the best direction together and adapt more easily to challenges.

I wanna be in the room where it happens…that is what it is like when you are invited to hear from founders of two billion dollar Aussie companies. When Jack Zhang, the CEO of Airwallex was interviewed by Anthony Zaccaria, the Co-Founder of Linktree, the themes were talent, talent, talent. It’s a constant reminder that what we do is all about the people. Here are some of my favourite nuggets from Jack: ❓ In the beginning…do you hire a recruiter? “For example I didn’t have a recruiter until I had 100 people. It didn’t make any sense. Such a waste of time.” ❓ What should you look for when hiring? “Problem solvers with startup characteristics.” “One thing hasn’t changed as we grow…raising the bar on talent.” 🔥 Retaining people “I’m super bullish on growing people. They are a better culture fit.” “Have to think about how to retain people because the longer they work together the better they work.” 🔥 Australia vs US “If you’re a founder in Australia try to hire in SF as soon as possible and get an investor in the US.” “It’s really helpful to have people who worked in Silicon Valley for a decade and then moved back.” One of my favourite tips for how to attract talent: 🌟 Show your passion as a founder and your commitment to grow with them. Thanks to Side Stage Ventures, Linktree and Airwallex for this great founder's event. And great to see you Rachelle Dunstan, 🔥Elaine Kwong🌶️, Ben Sze, CFA MAICD, and Mantas Aleks ✊ 🇺🇦. Want to chat about hiring? How to find talent either in Australia or in the US? Reach out, I'd love to help! Photo courtesy of 🔥Elaine Kwong🌶️ who captured a brilliant shot of the back of my head :) #Unicorns #Hiring #Talent #Startups
