SK chemicals Publishes “2023 Sustainability Report” - Presenting ESG management strategies and achievements in the “2023 Sustainability Report” SK chemicals, which is accelerating its eco-friendly transformation based on circular economy solutions, has published its sustainability report. SK chemicals (CEO Ahn Jae-hyun) announced on the 00th that it released its “2023 Sustainability Report” detailing its ESG activities over the past year. SK chemicals has been publishing sustainability reports for 14 consecutive years since 2010. These reports present its ESG management vision and transparently disclose its performance, thereby strengthening communication with various stakeholders, including customers, partner companies, local communities, and employees. In this report, SK chemicals stated that it is focusing on contributing to the reduction of plastic waste through expanded investment in Circular Recycle™, reducing carbon emissions from its business activities, and producing low-carbon products to reduce carbon emissions together with stakeholders throughout the value chain. The report also highlights environmental achievements from last year's ESG management, including △ being the first domestic chemical company in Korea to approve near-term greenhouse gas reduction targets from SBTi (Science Based Target initiative), △ obtaining the Gold grade in ZWTL (Zero Waste to Landfill) certification for waste recycling, and △ implementing renewable energy sources. Furthermore, to enhance diversity among the Board of Directors, the company appointed a female outside director, conducted human rights impact assessments, and obtained certifications for anti-corruption management systems and information security management systems. Ahn Jae-hyun, CEO of SK chemicals, said, “SK chemicals has been continuously making efforts and investments to address the global challenge of the climate crisis with a sense of responsibility and mission. We recognize solving environmental problems not as an option but as an imperative task, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and realize a complete circular system for recycled plastics.” SK chemicals was recognized for its ESG management efforts last year, achieving excellent results in domestic and international ESG evaluations. The company has maintained the highest A+ grade from the Korea ESG Standard Institute for two consecutive years and continues to be included in the DJSI KOREA index. 📢 New paper by Maja Wiprächtiger and Stefanie Hellweg: Does a high recycling rate mean low environmental impact? The study found that even an extremely large recycling rate above 95% of solvents in a chemical company was only able to retain 50% of the environmental value. Therefore, a maximum mass-based circularity is not necessarily enough to warrant sustainability, and additional measures such as the use of renewable energy or feedstock would be required in the specific case study to further reduce the environmental impacts. The study highlights that impact-based circularity metrics are needed to ensure sustainability, in addition to mass-based indicators. 📒 To read more: https://lnkd.in/eJMys2pN

E-Waste: ESG Solutions --- #malaysian #doe (Dept of Environment) classified electronic waste as a #toxic item. What is needed then is for the #esg management of this waste to be embedded in all #digitization initiatives to make #circulareconomy a pathway in its administrative #framework. Manufacturers of digital devices can contribute by introducing #epr (extended producer responsibility) programs to recover, recycle, repair, refurbish, remodel and reuse the resulting waste as second hand or aftermarket products. #supplychainsustainability can be framed and synchronized to minimize expensive collection cost covering wide geographical areas. Sub-sectors for after sales services have to be developed to achieve economy of scale through application of cost effective and time efficient methodologies to create a holistic yet engaging ecosystem to also benefit all the stakeholders. While the EU’s latest Batteries Regulation was introduced to help improve the sustainability of batteries and waste batteries, it doesn’t solve the bigger problem of our increasing reliance on batteries. In his latest blog, Giampaolo Marino discusses what companies need to know about these regulations (as well as how Energous WPN solutions can help):

𝟱 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 & 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰! ⭐ How will the economy affect operations and M&A activity? ⭐ New EPR legislation. What could change for brand owners, producer responsibility organizations, industry groups, recycling facility operators and municipalities? ⭐ PFAS remediation and management could come into sharper focus as EPA regulations on destruction and disposal techniques are expected to take shape. ⭐ RNG Projects coming online. "If 2022 was the year of major renewable natural gas developer acquisitions, and 2023 was the year of RNG facility planning, 2024 may be the beginning of a wave of project deliveries." ⭐ Organics processing capacity, spurred by legislation, is growing. Landfill operators work to extract value from existing landfill methane emissions, legislation is being designed to prevent organics from reaching landfills in the first place. Interesting to see, there's certainly a lot of things going on in the market at the moment. Much being fueled by regulators and regulation, how will this affect the waste & recycling industry? The ultimate goal is reduce landfill and increase recycling, I think with the right regulations in place it's achievable. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eXypb66g
