Green Technology Capacity Boost On Friday, August 16th, 2024, I had the privilege of attending a Green Technology capacity-building event organised by the Swedish Alumni Network Uganda and facilitated by Climate Hub International. Alongside fellow Sweden Alumni, we engaged in meaningful bonding and networking while gaining invaluable insights into carbon emissions, including carbon offsetting, carbon credits, and carbon footprints. The experience was truly eye-opening, especially when we learned how to calculate our individual carbon footprints. Some key takeaways for me included: The critical importance of working together in achieving sustainable development goals. As the Luganda saying goes, “The teeth that are together are the ones that can bite off and chew a piece of meat.” Strategies for integrating sustainability into our development planning. The concept that "waste is gold," emphasising the importance of knowing how to manage it effectively, involving the right stakeholders, and establishing the necessary infrastructure to reduce operational costs for investors. A heartfelt thank you to our facilitators, #MrClintonMawanda, #DrAlexNduhura, and #DrBenMugerwa, for enlightening us. I also extend my gratitude to the entire Climate Hub International team, #theEmbassyofSweden, and our Alumni Chairperson, #MsDianahTibatemwa, for organising such an informative and enjoyable event. Nature needs funding, and funding needs knowledge. Science-driven nature-based solutions come to life when the right players understand each other and connect in action with shared values. On the sidelines of #UNEA6 held in February in Nairobi, we launched a new initiative called Resilient Landscapes Luxembourg (RLL). RLL is a groundbreaking collaboration between CIFOR-ICRAF and the Luxembourg government that aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and high-impact investment opportunities in nature-based solutions (NbS). By harnessing the power of science, RLL will connect investors with NbS opportunities that generate positive environmental and social outcomes. While the relationship between science and business has been evolving, there is still a need to improve the dialogue between the two fields to create synergies with substantive impact. In an effort to address this challenge, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and CIFOR-ICRAF established Resilient Landscapes Luxembourg (RLL), to connect science with high-impact NbS investment opportunities throughout the geographies of landscape investment. In the coming years, the partnership will leverage funding for Nature-based solutions. More specifically, RLL intends to focus on incubating projects that have either emerged from the CIFOR-ICRAF research portfolio or that come from external sources and can benefit from CIFOR-ICRAF’s outstanding research database and network of partners and project activities in over 60 countries. The International Resource Panel (IRP)'s flagship report - the Global Resources Outlook 2024 - will be released tomorrow, March 1st, at the 6th UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya. Bringing together the best available data, modeling and assessments, the report illustrates how rising trends in global resource use have accelerated and are expected to further increase. ❗ Without urgent and concerted action, by 2060 resource extraction could rise by 60% from 2020 levels. 🔔 The report rings an alarm bell: "the pathway towards sustainability is increasingly steep and narrow, and the window of opportunity is closing". 🍃 Let's work all together to make resource use a driver for human wellbeing within planetary boundaries! I just saw this new program to build capacity for innovation and resilience in sustainable development which will be taught at Lund University School of Economics and Management. Its a partnership with the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD and the European Union. The program is described as a 'graduate-level capacity building programme that explores the role of innovation in transforming the economy and increasing social resilience over the long-term process of sustainable development in a low-income country context.' I think this is a great idea and much needed and has potential to be transformative. HOWEVER, it cannot when it does not consider the connections between any innovation, economic development, or resilience action, and the environment/biodiversity/ecosystem integrity. I looked at the course offerings, and I want to urge the organizers of the program to consider including a study area required for all participants on biodiversity, ecosystem integrity, and ecosystem services. We know that economic development and achievement of the SDGs is based on a healthy functioning environment which provides we humans with the services and natural resources we need to survive and develop and innovate. Any innovation or intervention must consider the environmental ramifications and lost opportunities/environmental costs, not just short term economic gains. The lack of attention to this point is why we are in the situation we are in with climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. It is very disheartening to see in 2024 that new programs built on studies in science, innovation and technology, resilient and sustainable development, indicators of innovation, and so on, have no required training in the environment, ecosystem functioning, and biodiversity. We must understand that these issues are interconnected.
