Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting ecomaine, Maine’s only community-owned, non-profit waste management company with Tom's of Maine, getting to witness firsthand what happens to our waste downstream. For a waste enthusiast like myself, this was incredible! Their facility operates a state-of-the-art single-sort recycling system and a Waste-to-Energy facility for over 70 communities in Maine. Ecomaine’s Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant converts non-recyclable waste into electricity. I learned that this process not only powers their facilities, and electric vehicles, but also provides energy for approximately 15,000 homes in Maine. WTE is a great alternative to the traditional raw waste landfill (reducing GHG emissions by around 90%), but it doesn’t solve the crux of our waste problem. To do that we got to start from the beginning. 1)Refuse what you don’t need, 2) Reduce what you can, 3) Reuse 4) Repair 5) Recycle only what you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse. Thank you to Beatrice Johnson for being the best tour guide and for always sharing nuggets of waste wisdom with me and the Tom’s team.
