“Why do we do it this way?” “Why do we do this thing?” “Why is that the rule?” “Why?” “I’m not sure.” “That’s just what we’ve always done.” “We just always have.” “It’s been that way as long as I’ve worked here, and I’ve been here x years.” Those are not the best answers to those questions, and, unfortunately, it’s easy to get in the habit of responding with a vague and agreeable answer instead of more solid and supported answer. When asked why, we should have what I call a “justified response.” A justified response is one that logically supports why we do the thing or have the rule. A justified response is evidence and logic based, not vague and essentially brushing off the question. If the answer to a “why” question is one of the ones above, start asking more questions. Start doing research to find out the why. You’ll be surprised what all you can learn along the way. Plus, you never know what kind of changes for the better can come from asking why. Maybe there’s an easier, better, or more efficient way!

Today is April Fools! I would like to take a moment to call this "Misinformation Awareness Day!" Please take this day as a reminder that no matter the day, there is information that is intentionally manipulated or unintentionally malformed that conveys the wrong facts, message, or opinion. If you have been fooled today, please ask what went wrong and refine your critical thinking skills! Your future self will thank you for it. Be sure to: 1. Ask questions 2. FULLY read and EVALUATE the post that you are currently forming an opinion about, 3. Research further about topics, cross-validate, and understand the author's credibility, 4. Stay vigilant Happy fooling! Update: - Even if the individual is reputable, there still exists the possibility that their accounts could be compromised and that another individual could share misinformation under their name. The reputable individual could also unintentionally (or intentionally) put their credibility on the line by sharing such info.
