Check out #flanigansecologic featuring Mary Nichols, who served as the chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for a total of 18 years. Mary is widely recognized for a career as one of the world’s most important #environmentalregulators. Over a career as an #environmentallawyer spanning over 45 years, she has played a key role in California and the nation’s progress toward #healthyair. She and Ted discuss her background receiving her J.D. from Yale Law School, devoting her career to #fightingairpollution from then on. She shares that her interest in the #environment came about as a result of having been involved in the #civilrights and #antiwar movements, believing in the need for activism at the community level. After law school, she worked as an attorney for the Center for Law in the Public Interest in Los Angeles where she brought the first litigation under the then recently passed #cleanairact. During her #leadership at the CARB, California became a national leader at developing #cleanenergy and #cleantransportation solutions that many other states and nations have adopted. She shares with Ted that her current climate-related work is focused in China, travelling there twice a year in her capacity as a member of the board of The Energy Foundation. https://lnkd.in/giS8hrFq

I’m pleased to share a snippet of our project “Nature as a Victim: A New Paradigm for Post-Conflict Justice in Colombia”. My team and I, in partnership with the Human Rights Clinic and the Special Jurisdiction of Peace, have worked on this report since November of last year and now it is finally finished! Please feel free to read our recent blog discussing this project (linked below) to learn more about this important approach to environmental harm and conflict.
University of Essex Human Rights Centre Clinic project explores Colombia's groundbreaking approach: recognizing nature as victim of conflict. Special Jurisdiction for Peace blends indigenous wisdom with legal frameworks to heal communities and ecosystems. A new paradigm for environmental justice emerges. At present, individuals are not held criminally liable when it is proven that their decisions have led to devastating environmental damage, such as vast chemical or oil spills, or the clear cutting of primary rainforests. To begin with, we need to redefine nature, having it list human beings as part of it. There needs to be the question between intent and result. The intent might normally not have been to harm, but the result surely can defeat the intent, thus the law. There is a direct ripple effect of the law on morality. The Ecocide Law will fundamentally reconfigure the moral and legal order in favor of nature and in turn all of us that rely on it for our prosperity and survival, both at peace and at conflict times. There is no business on a dead planet, things need to now change. #ecocidelaw #youth #neworder #morality #nature #hope

When you see Johan Rockström's TED talk, which runs you through the latest in climate science, tipping points, you see why he is both nervous but also still optimistic about the current state of the planet. It takes us all to saveguard the earth system to all be winners. The more citizens across all continents express their support to drastic collective remedial action, the more will governments find the courage to put the policies in place to make it happen.

Just after the celebration of the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law in the European Parliament, EU Member States crushed the hopes of young people all over Europe by not achieving the necessary qualified majority to adopt the long-awaited Nature Restoration Law in Friday’s meeting of EU ambassadors. As representatives of European #youth, we express profound disappointment in Hungary's last-minute reversal and unequivocally denounce the stance of Member States that have withheld support for the legislation, thus disregarding the concerns of young people. Read our full youth statement in this post and on our websites. #NatureRestoration #NatureRestorationLaw #YouthInclusion #ForOurPlanet #GenerationClimateEurope

📣 #CallForReading 🌍 In recent years, a shift has emerged in how we perceive children's rights and agency. For the very first time, on a global scale, children and youth have taken the reigns across public spaces and turned to national and international courts to call for more urgent and ambitious climate action. 🔎 In the Youth Climate Justice project, we investigate how this wave of child/youth climate action is challenging the arena of international children’s rights law, marking what we call a "postpaternalist" era. ❓ Interested on what #Postpaternalism is? ✍ Our keystone journal article explaining this theory was published on 29 September 2024! Below, you’ll find a summary of the manuscript.
