🌟🇳🇴 Norway's gender equality is globally recognized, yet our journey is far from over. Even today, statistics reveal stark imbalances in corporate leadership across all industries. As of 2023, women comprise 20% of limited boards. In the 200 largest Norwegian companies, 84.5% of CEOs and 87% of Chairs are male. Where we have had longstanding mandates in public companies, women are 43% of Boards. Look across the table at general managers - where there are no mandates - and women are 9%. Look to founders and only 1 in 4 is female. These figures underscore an urgent need for #action to dismantle barriers to female advancement. Thanks to NHO Ole Erik Almlid The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) Peggy Hessen Følsvik and the Norwegian government Jan Christian Vestre, new regulations for medium-sized & large companies move towards 40% gender balance in boards. These rules began rolling out Jan 1, 2024 and will cover 20,000 companies by 2028. Norway is the first in the world to take this step. We should be proud! 🇳🇴 But what does this really mean❓ Already in 2024, approx 6,600 new board reps are needed, mostly women. Let's assume 50% needed are women and 5% needed are health & life science companies (we KNOW it is more on both). That means 165 women needed for board seats in health & life science companies in 2024❗ No woman wants to be chosen as part of a mandate - and that's not the aim. The point is, we have untapped talent right here - educated, skilled, strong, valuable #women who aren't at the top. The point is to offer the training & confidence needed for each woman to stand up and say, "This is meant for me." Enter Women in Life Science Norway (WiLD Norway). As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we have the privilege of spotlighting the contributions of a few of the remarkable women at O’Hara’s Son Roofing (OSR). In this short interview, we have the honor of speaking with LisaMarie M., a branch manager at OSR. Lisa exemplifies the resilience, expertise, and innovation that women bring to the forefront of a traditionally male-dominated industry. Lisa Martin Service Branch Manager OSR NJ Branch: Serving the North-East Region 1.  What led you to a career in roofing? Expanding into an existing family business by utilizing women’s business incentive programs significantly fostered my successful career in the roofing industry as a woman. The roofing field’s allure, technical knowledge, problem-solving, and the opportunity to contribute to large-scale projects, drew me in and sparked my passion for this industry. 2.  What have been your barriers and how did you overcome them? Throughout my career in a male-dominated field, I faced barriers such as gender biases, limited networking opportunities, and the need for consistent self-validation. To overcome these challenges, I sought mentorship and support networks, attended industry events to learn from others, and focused on proving my expertise through quality work and building relationships. My resilience, determination, and continuous self-improvement allowed me to gradually gain trust, respect, and success. 3.  What woman in history inspires you most and why? Emily Warren Roebling is an inspirational figure for women in male-dominated roles. Despite societal expectations, she oversaw the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge when her husband fell ill. Facing discrimination, she took on the challenge, demonstrating intelligence, determination, and problem-solving skills. Her achievements break barriers, showcase women’s capabilities, and inspire future generations to pursue their passions. Emily’s legacy embodies the power of perseverance and serves as a reminder of the significant contributions women can make in any field, irrespective of societal expectations. Inviting women to the decision table has been optional until now, and unfortunately, boardrooms have not changed. It's inevitable that this policy might be unsettling for some - forcing a possibly inconvenient and maybe even untimely shift of the board. We all know, especially in the start-up world, a board can make or break a company. Choosing who gets to vote when things really matter, is crucial. In reality, some men will have to step down, opening up space for women to equally participate in decision-making. It is a paradoxical twist — who wants to be down-prioritized because of their gender? 💡 But skills, knowledge, and experiences know no gender. Most of us want products and services, and companies made by women and men, with equal impact to influence how the products and services we use are formed for us. Today, when things really matter - the real impact - is so far from being equal. The policy has to force it. And this policy isn't just about giving women a seat at the table. It is literally about changing who gets to build the table in the first place. I know plenty of capable and experienced women looking for an opportunity to step up.
