We are often asked, if bike sharing can also work beyond large cities and metropolitan regions. The answer is a definite yes! Bike sharing also brings many advantages to the transportation network of smaller cities, as well as suburban and rural areas! Here are a few examples: ➡ nextbike Niederösterreich, our bike share offer for Lower Austria - powered by Radland Niederösterreich - not only provides a large-scale sustainable mobility option for roughly 60 municipalities across the region, it also surpasses its personal best on a regular basis. Already this year, rentals for the first two months almost tripled! ➡ E-bikes turn hilly terrains and longer distances into a breeze. By providing e-bikes for rural areas and more challenging terrains, we turn cycling not only into an elemental means of transport, we also make it accessible to a broader audience. Here are a few examples: BBK Klimabizi a small bike share scheme for the Urdaibai Region in Spain, EinfachMobil a supra-regional multi-modal scheme for the Ortenau region and many more. ➡ Last but not least we would like to share a very special initiative: Thanks to a special commuters’ tariff, users of the schemes Bergisches E-Bikes, RVK E-Bike, Eifel E-Bike and RSVG_Bike e-bikes, only pay a discounted price when they rent one of our bikes during the night. Thus, they can easily use a nextbike when they cycle home after work and rely on the same bike to get back to work the next day. Some of our team are joining the River Ride to Ngāruawāhia and back tomorrow as part of our Aotearoa Bike Month challenge. Bike month is the time of the year when we have some focused support on confidence building for interested team members, a cheer squad and an enthuser who helps with solutions and encourages experiences. Also, some of our team are a wee bit competitive. Transport connects people with communities, infrastructure, and amenities. A safe, affordable, and low-carbon transport system is essential as a solution to affordability and climate crises. Shout out to Kelli Pike for keeping us on task and advocating for infrastructure first because we also recognise that equity must be central to this transition. Go Eco recognises that until better options are available, private car travel remains the only safe and reliable option for many people. Last week my post on biking and circularity (see comments) went viral with over 1m views Interestingly the conversation that unfolded highlighted a couple things: 🚲 The impact of the product choice (e.g. a bike vs a car) is much larger on a system level than just on a product level. In other words it not just about the 15kg bike vs the 2000 kg car in material use, but you also need to consider the infrastructure required, such as roads and parking spaces. Replacing a fuel car with electric only addresses part of the problem. 🏡 Developing cities with a walking, biking and public infrastructure in mind can create much more compact and greener cities that are not only more pleasant but also have a much lower footprint 🌞 Biking infrastructure is essential to make it safe and convenient - in warmer climates this may need to include local shower facilities. 👟 Walking and biking keeps you fit, while getting from A to B. Don't underestimate the health benefits in populations were obesity might be one of our biggest challenges. Meet our bike enthusiast, Pieter Van Compernolle! 👋 Pieter has been riding his bike to work long before it became trendy. He fondly remembers the early days at our old HQ, where he’d get creative with the limited space for changing. Today, he’s especially grateful for Skyline’s thoughtful additions of spacious changing rooms and indoor bike stalls. And as a father, he is eternally grateful for his wife, who always managed the morning routine with the kids when they were younger, allowing him to enjoy his daily bike commute. 🚵 For bike enthusiasts, it’s all about the joy of the ride. They love the wind in their face and the thrill of speed, making every bike ride a perfect way to unwind and add a sense of adventure to their day. -- In Belgium, biking is deeply ingrained in the culture, yet only 32% of employees commute by bike. 🚲 But there's a silver lining: the percentage of cyclists increases every year. 📈 (At Skyline, much of this growth is driven by our #SportsCommittee, which actively promotes cycling to work through various incentives and encouragement.) 🚴♂️ From Paris to Amsterdam to Sicily: Reflecting on the Netherlands’ Incredible Bike Infrastructure 🚴♀️ After biking 650 kilometers from Paris to Amsterdam and then to Maastricht, I’ve seen firsthand just how remarkable the Netherlands’ bike infrastructure is. Whether commuting or cycling for leisure, the country’s seamless network of paths, tunnels, and bike-friendly streets serves everyone. In my latest Medium article, I dive into what makes the Dutch biking infrastructure so special—from government policies that date back to the 1970s to the modern-day innovations that keep cyclists safe and moving. 🚴♀️🚦 📸 I’ve also included some photos of the impressive infrastructure I came across, like a bike escalator in an underwater tunnel and color-coded bike lanes in Delft.
