Innovation in farming...tech at the service of other branches: One of the recurring themes in the annual EAAP - European Federation of Animal Science meeting was the value of PLF for other research branches. Genetic and breeding, feed, physiological studies, animal welfare and more. The 75th EAAP was filled with fascinating outcomes and informative presentations and what is better than catching up with peers! I had the chance to present findings from an exciting Public Private Partnership focusing on the use of local protein sources in 1-Star Better Life broilers. We found that slow-growing broilers were able to maintain performance even when soybean meal was completely replaced with local protein sources, resulting in diets with a lower carbon footprint. Additionally, including Black Soldier Fly larvae meal in the SBM-free diet improved feed efficiency. We also looked into incorporating wet ingredients in pelleted feed. We found that increasing the pellet moisture by incorporating wet ingredients, this time a less processed Black Soldier fly product, called PureeX, did not compromise body weight gain. This further highlights the need for the poultry feed sector to explore opportunities around wet ingredients. More results are in the pipeline! P-values have become an indispensable tool in statistical inference, playing a crucial role in plant and animal breeding research. They provide a quantitative measure of the strength of evidence against a null hypothesis, typically the assumption that there is no effect of interest. However, the use of p-values has been the subject of ongoing debate and controversy, including in the context of analysing the complex data associated with plant and animal breeding programmes.
