Want to make change easier? Start by honouring the past!🌟 Why? 👇 When leading a team through change, it’s essential to recognise and respect the journey that brought you (and your team) here. Frances Frei and Anne Morriss emphasise this in Storytelling That Drives Bold Change. According to them, honouring past successes can make the transition smoother and help people feel valued, even looking forward. Honouring the past can look like: 🔹 Acknowledge the value of what came before (recognise past achievements!) 🏆 Celebrate the good things of the fact. The fact that you’re going into a different direction now, does not mean that what colleagues used to do was no good. The wonderful things of the past got the organisation to where you are now. Or as Elske Westerdaal of the City of Venlo puts it in my book 'Zo krijg je iedereen mee': “Many reorganisations take a negative perspective. People feel like nothing was any good. Whereas it did use to work well in the past. “The environment is changing and we are keeping up with the times’ sounds more positive and this positive approach always works better anyhow.'” Why does this work? → People feel their past efforts are appreciated. 🔹 Create a respectful wrap-up 💬 Instead of abruptly moving on, offer team members a chance to reflect. For example, Frederieke Stokking - Maagdenberg at ProRail shared how their transformation phased out certain steering groups to streamline decision-making. Rather than just ending them, they held wrap-up meetings, inviting members to share feedback or loose ends. Why does this work? → This respectful transition acknowledged the contribution of past structures. It made people feel heard and strengthened their commitment to the new direction. Ready to take action? 🤝 Try this experiment! → Hold a wrap-up session as you close any legacy initiatives Give your team space to discuss past wins, share valuable lessons, and build a bridge to the future.
