Homelessness and its underlying causes are multifaceted. The term covers a range of situations, including people sleeping rough, single individuals living in emergency or temporary supported accommodation, households legally recognised as homeless and seeking assistance from local authorities, and the 'hidden homeless'—such as those ‘sofa surfing’. The growing homeless population presents considerable challenges for agencies striving to provide preventive support and interventions that address complex needs. This tool has been designed to assist practitioners from statutory bodies, charities, and third-sector organizations in gathering information in a way that enables lawful decision-making and fosters effective interventions. These interventions uphold key safeguarding principles, including empowering adults at risk to take steps to protect themselves. Did you know that there are more homeless children in the UK now, than there are people in Ipswich? The number of homeless children in the UK is at a record high. Last week the BBC reported that there are 151,630 young people in this country without a stable home. These rising figures clearly signify an urgent need to reform our overstretched social care system. Now more than ever, investment in charities like The Big House can help to intervene and alleviate the problem. 50% of the young people who come to The Big House do not have a stable home. Part of our mandate is in supporting them to find secure housing. Through a combination of direct advocacy/advice and addressing tangible barriers, we ensure post the completion of a Big House project, 100% of those who arrived homeless are in suitable, safe accommodation. If you or your company are interested in supporting our mission, see the various ways in which you can get involved here: https://lnkd.in/epf3diNn

🚨 Urgent Action Needed: This season is hard enough, let's lend a helping hand for our Neighbors on the Street 🚨 Homelessness already presents immense challenges, but the additional strain of winter conditions compounded by the threat of losing winter survival equipment and medications, without adequate and safe spaces to sleep, can be life-threatening. Meanwhile, the most recent Point in Time count reported that there are at least 2,734 people experiencing homelessness. The situation is worsening, and we can’t stand by and watch. Here's how you can help: 💙 Donate: Every dollar helps provide critical care, from cold weather health outreach to housing support and social services. www.abqhch.org/donate 🤝 Take Action: Share this message, volunteer, or raise awareness. Following an investigation into the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP), the protocol triggered by local authorities during extreme weather, it was discovered that the number of deaths recorded in summer months exceeds those in winter due to extreme heat and heat-related illnesses. The report found only 53% of councils activated SWEP in summer months despite temperatures reaching up to 40°c. This highlights the urgent need for better support systems and the critical role of small homelessness charities in filling these gaps. The work we do at VPS often means we are working in vacant and unoccupied spaces, and our operations teams often see first-hand the effects of rough sleepers at our sites, with persons that may be sheltering from the elements. We have been collaborating with Crisis – Our chosen charity partner to provide information and guidance to our teams. We believe our colleagues should feel empowered to help, aid and assist anyone struggling with homelessness. Our teams will have ongoing training and resources to ensure the right action can be taken to provide help to those that need it. 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. #VPS #CrisisUK #Homelessness

The Government has announced today almost £1 billion in funding for councils across England to help reduce and prevent #homelessness. This is welcome news, as more resources will be available for charities and frontline workers to help find secure homes for those rough sleeping or in temporary accommodation. However, more determined efforts to build social housing and the development of an effective homelessness strategy will ensure long-term change to reduce and resolve homelessness. Why Grassroots Charities Are Vital for Mental Health and Community Resilience... In recognition of #WorldMentalHealthDay, my latest article, published yesterday, highlights the essential role grassroots charities play in supporting mental health and building stronger communities. Unlike larger organisations, grassroots initiatives, like #VillagehoodAustralia, offer personalised, community-driven solutions. Our peer support programs provide mothers facing mental health challenges with a safe space to connect and heal, making a lasting impact on individuals and society. Grassroots charities are agile, cost-effective, and deeply rooted in their communities, but they often struggle with limited funding. Now, more than ever, it’s critical to invest in these local initiatives to create long-term social and economic benefits. If you or your organisation would like to support our mission of improving #maternalmentalhealth, let’s connect! Together, we can expand our impact and ensure no mother faces her mental health challenges alone. You can find the article here: https://lnkd.in/gy9nW2HX
