This post and the photo of what a modern auto ‘junkyard’ looks like reminded me of a recent experience I had walking one of these yards (yes, I still go to them when needing something for a vehicle!). The majority of the cars in the yard looked fine—they were not wrecked or had leaking, blown-up engines. Yet, there they sat being slowly dismantled by folks like me. The fact that these cars ‘looked’ fine tells me they all suffered from some level of mysterious part failures that caused their owners to finally give up on them. As an example, I recently bought a 2010 model year sedan for a ridiculously low price after the owner had spent literally thousands of dollars chasing a ‘ghost’ (his words not mine) and couldn’t get the vehicle to stop randomly setting codes and dying on the side of the road. I diagnosed the problem to a temp-related short in the fuseblock🤪 and found a replacement in a totalled junkyard donor (picking it because I figured it was running fine when destroyed). The swap cured the problem. I have never understood why product manufacturers don’t offer upgraded parts that address these common failures (which are easy to find with simple internet searching). Offering these parts would generate revenue and goodwill for their customers while reducing waste…
