One of my very first aviation photos taken at work. It's a Gulfstream GIV-SP, so usual many years ago and so unusual today. I like business jets not for their luxury cabins and price. Each of them is a great example of the advanced engineering compacted into a relatively small machine. The Gulfstream GIV family holds several world records for its flight range and performances. It's not a surprise that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration operates a GIV to study weather cyclones. Its stunning cruise level makes it possible for scientists to fly at 45000 feet around tropical cyclones.The aircraft was modified to drop instruments called "dropsondes" to measure windspeed, barometric pressure, humidity, and temperature as they fall. By sampling the cyclone with these dropsondes the forecasters at NOAA's National Hurricane Center can better predict where the hurricane will move next. ❄️🌨️Lesson from the cold - small things can make a big difference. Many of us are coming out of cold weather. 🏔️☃️One of my coldest nights was spent in a snow cave in Alaska. 🪖At the time, I was a Platoon Leader and Arctic Paratrooper in Alaska. ❄️🌲We were based in Ft. Richardson, AK, but at Ft. Greely, Alaska, to go through the Arctic Warrior Survival Course. 🥶🌨️It was -40(F), and we had to spend the night in the snow shelters we had constructed. 🌨️🌲We built caves with tree branches, covered with foliage, and then covered that with a layer of snow. Inside, we cleared the snow from the ground. With the snow removed the ground radiates 10-15 degrees of "heat." That plus a small camp stove that you could only run for short periods made the difference. 15 degrees isn't warm, but it beats -40. Small things will make a difference. Lots of new connections recently, hello 👋 Not sure why, maybe all the Spitfire videos 😉 A little introduction. I’m a pilot, although I never mention it. But my main reason for being here on LinkedIn is to raise awareness and funds for the Hawker Typhoon Preservation Group. We are a small group of volunteers working hard to raise the considerable funds required to return a Hawker Typhoon MkIb to flight. There are none airworthy in the world. Without the Typhoons “D-Day” might not have happened, if it did it might not have been a success, and if it was then the subsequent battle of Normandy would not have been won. Period. How many times have you seen any mention of the Typhoons in this year’s D-Day 80 build up? I’d wager it’s not many. If at all. That’s what we’re trying to put right. Yes we need a lot of money, but that is not a lot spread between all those who would like to see one fly. We have no corporate backing, believe me though we have tried. And we still are. So until we do (if we ever do?) it falls on us, the normal people, to put hands in pockets and get this rebuild moving. A few quid a month, or more, really does make a difference.
