We covered a lot of really good topics in this Deconstructor of Fun episode. One that I think is going to become top of mind for every creator past 2024 is the topic of resonance. Here’s the thing. Companies in general can’t compete like they used to. The levers to drive revenue used to be price. I used to work at Big Fish Games. How’d they initially scale? They dropped their web games down to $19.99, well below the competition. Today? Price sensitivity has dropped with inflation- Pepsi can’t just undercut Coca-Cola to gain market share- neither can your game. The next was product and features. When Roblox came out or Minecraft and UGC started to get big, these sort of features could drive big results. Today, tropes and features are very well saturated. This makes feature road maps very challenging for driving revenue. They take a long time to build and have a high rate of failure when they are not resonance tested against your audience (something we do at Solsten). The next revenue driver is brand. Growing a brand is not only tough, it takes a very long time. Today, according to Forrester, 80% of us will cancel one of our favorite brands in the next 5 years. People are more value driven than ever in their purchasing and want less and not more in their life. We went through a content explosion which will lead to a quality refinement. How companies protect their brands is top of mind for the majority of CEO’s. So how will we drive revenue in the future? 75% of CEOs according to Forrester (again) see experience as their number 1 growth driver through the rest of the 2020’s. What is experience? It’s all the ways your game or product touch the end user that result in resonance. And resonance is the deep meaningful connection they feel- it’s how your product becomes a part of their story. What do resonance and experience have in common? You need to understand your audience psychologically (not behaviorally or demographically) to unlock their potential. Your competition is certainly starting to ramp up on understanding their players and even yours psychologically. Every game and experience is different- no two audiences are alike. The end winners of this stage of industry maturity will be players who get to take part in the quality of psychologically built experiences and the game companies who realize the vast array of revenue drivers that result as a consequence of building resonanance with their audiences. In 5-10 years, the game companies who said “we know all about our players behavior and who they are” but missed the psychology part, will be the next generation of the layoff train and studio extinctions unfortunately. Like every changing industry, not all will survive it, but the good news is that this will also open a whole new reality for younger up and coming developers and the ones that pivot to build for resonance and psychology to become the new market leaders. #gaming #resonance #psycholgoy
