Today, it is the second post on how autonomous shuttles and vehicles, as part of public transport or campus mobility, contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yesterday, I introduced Good Health (SDG 3) and today I am focusing on Infrastructure (SDG 9). Private cars consume vast amounts of public space. Consider this: if the average parking space measures are 2m x 5m then one space needs 10 square meters (m2). In Berlin alone, with approximately 1.2 million cars in 2023, this equates to a minimum of 12 million m2 of space dedicated to cars. Obviously, there are garages and parking halls, but quite many is using on-street parking or parked on dedicated parking area. The urban mobility revolution starts by seeing streets through placement, not movement, function. In this scenario, autonomous shuttles and buses play a crucial role. They are one ingredient in redefining urban mobility and reducing private cars. Consequently, cities can reclaim valuable space, which can be allocated to people and green building initiatives. Now, consider the importance of urban trees. A single tree can absorb an average of 10 kilograms of CO2 per year for the first 20 years of its life. Additionally, trees contribute to cooling urban areas. Last, numerous studies have highlighted the mental and physical health benefits of urban forests, including reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, and improved overall mood. Stay tuned for our next discussion, focusing on Reducing Inequalities.
