World Non-Governmental organization (NGO Day) is celebrated every year on February 27. The day is dedicated to recognize, celebrate and honour all non-governmental and nonprofit organizations, and the people behind them that contribute to the society all year around. The theme for the 2024 World NGO Day is 'Building a Sustainable Future: The Role of NGOs in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).' NGOs act as watchdogs, considering governments and enterprises responsible for their activities. Through advocacy, research, and public awareness campaigns, they focus light on injustices, bring issues to light about major problems, and prepare communities to request action. The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) is the umbrella Organization of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in Nigeria. Since 1992, our multi-dimensional approaches are broadly premised on coordinating a unified coalition(s) geared towards ensuring that the rights, inclusion and access for persons with disabilities are enhanced and sustained. As part of the Province’s goal to improve accessibility for people with disabilities in BC, Disability Alliance BC was selected by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction (MSDPR) to distribute funding to community-based “Accessibility Projects” beginning in 2018. Since then, over 80 projects have been funded throughout BC. The Province has now announced that the grants will be available again in 2024/25. A total of $450,000 will be made available to BC-based not-for-profit organizations. Successful applicants will receive up to a $40,000 grant to implement a year-long project in 2025. May 26th-June 1st is AccessAbility Week in BC and Canada and this year's #NAAW theme is "Forward Together: Accessibility and Inclusion for All." DABC is pleased to be able to once again distribute funds that will improve access and inclusion for people with disabilities in BC. Applications will open on Friday, August 2nd, 2024. #Didyouknow many children living with disabilities from #Ukraine struggle to find regular access to specialist care in their own language, or places at suitable education centers in #Poland? Our latest research found that language barriers, lack of information, and lengthy administrative procedures were the main challenges for children getting the support they need. The findings are based on interviews with caregivers, educators, and practitioners providing support to children and their families in Wrocław, Łódź, Lublin, and Kraków, through our partner organizations Fundacja Rozwoju Dzieci and #Patchwork. Almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life.”- World Health Organization According to WHO, an estimated 1.3 billion people – about 16% of the global population – currently experience significant disability. This translates to 33 million people with disabilities in Pakistan. This story is not just Sakina’s but the untold story of 33 million people of Pakistan who face inescapable poverty cycles perpetuated by systemic inequality, limited access to education and healthcare, and a lack of economic opportunities, trapping generations in a cycle of deprivation. ⭐ Following on from the Holiday Hunger event last week there has been continued momentum around actions to tackle food poverty: 📅 On Thursday the Children's Rights Alliance attended the Department of Social Protection's annual Pre-Budget Forum. 📄 Our submission to this department calls for increases in targeted income supports in order to have the greatest impact on families on the lowest incomes. This includes a recommendation to raise the Qualified Child Increase by a minimum of €6 for under 12s and €15 for over 12s, a recommendation that many in our sector are also calling for. 🥘 In addition we are asking the government to continue to respond to the issue of #FoodPoverty by maintaining momentum in expanding investment in the provision of hot school meals - this would mean bringing the remaining non-DEIS primary schools into the initiative and looking at expansion to DEIS secondary schools. We are also calling for the development of a pilot initiative to address holiday hunger by leveraging existing community infrastructure, and relationships. 🚨 On the day of the pre-Budget Forum Minister Joe O'Brien published an action plan from the Food Poverty Working Group (which the Alliance sits on). It is welcome to see that this includes an action to scope out measures to address #HolidayHunger in Q2 2025. Together with the UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa regional teams, we developed the methodological note on Disability Inclusive budgeting. The note offers practical guidance for designing and implementing CRPD compliant public finance management system with a view to enhance the capacity of UNICEF country offices and stakeholders leave no one behind in the budgeting process.
