"Teaching mathematics means more than introducing algorithms and procedures to students. Research shows that effective instruction also involves the development of a student’s conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. One research-based approach to mathematics instruction is Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), as described in Children’s Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction (Carpenter et al., 2014). CGI shifts an educator’s focus away from direct instruction and toward understanding an individual student’s mathematical thinking. The teacher then leverages this understanding as the foundation to guide the student toward increasingly complex concepts." 📖 Finish reading on the blog: https://bit.ly/3spGKDj #MathEd #MathTeacher #Math #CGI

Our new report on student recovery finds gaps in math achievement post-pandemic. Older cohorts showed improvement over time, but the gap between historical and post-pandemic growth trajectories is widening for younger students. Learn more: http://bit.ly/3RCFE0s
While both reading and math rely on foundational skills, students learn math in sequence, making it difficult to move forward if they miss a key concept. Our latest research shows an immediate decline in math learning growth post-pandemic. If we look at the Grade K cohort over three years, the gap between historical and post-pandemic growth trajectories in mathematics is widening. When do students derive the most enjoyment from learning mathematics? Students find the utmost enjoyment in learning mathematics when the teacher immerses them in the concepts, proficiently explaining and justifying each formula employed, along with elucidating the practical applications associated with them. Based on my teaching experience, this immersive approach fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for the subject, creating an environment where students genuinely enjoy the process of unraveling mathematical concepts. #matheducation #mathematicsteaching #stemlearning #educationalinsights #conceptualmath #teacherexperience #mathenthusiasm #realworldmath #studentengagement #learningjourney #mathematicsexploration #educationinsights

Visionaries of the Future: Celebrating Mathematics, Science, and the Art of Strategic Play October 11, Liberty Science Center, Jersey City Have you ever wondered how math lessons can be more fun and efficient? Of course, educators around the world have been asking themselves in recent years how to improve the teaching of mathematics. One solution could be to integrate chess, the Rubik's Cube and puzzles into math lessons, as they offer a diverse approach to learning. Not only do they improve basic math skills, but they also promote important life skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and perseverance. By engaging students in these activities, teachers can create a lively and interactive learning atmosphere that fosters a deep appreciation for math. At the Visionary Scientists Conference, you'll learn that, too.
