ICYMI: The bipartisan New Essential Education Discoveries (NEED) Act has been introduced in the Senate by Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). The NEED Act is a significant step toward developing a stronger education research and development system to support better learning outcomes and improve national competitiveness. The bill would authorize a National Center for Advanced Development in Education to advance informed-risk high-reward, education R&D projects. At some point someone is going to have to do a research paper on this entire process; how and why it went off the rails, and the long-term impact it will have on higher education. It is April 5 and prospective students have no idea how much potential state and federal aid they might receive. I can't underscore just how significant this is and what an impact this could have not just on higher education, but the economy, etc. We are already receiving reports that potentially millions of fewer FAFSA's are being filed in 2024 compared to 2023. A think-tank is calling for financial education to be added to England's primary school curriculum after a survey revealed just 1% of teachers think pupils have adequate financial skills. A spokesperson said the UK has comparatively low levels of financial literacy, and that these parallel existing socioeconomic inequalities across the population. The House of Commons education committee is conducting an inquiry into the current state of financial education. Education is at a stalemate. We have wrapped up one school year and entering another, with even fewer teachers on the horizon. An ongoing debate on how to measure teacher effectiveness hasn't helped either. We've prioritized job security over innovation. Unions battle for better pay, not better jobs. Experienced teachers are exiting, and new ones are deterred. The result? Classrooms with fewer teachers, and students paying the price. Instead of pouring more federal funds into this faltering system, we need to fix it from within. Over two decades ago, we took a wrong turn with No Child Left Behind. We focused on teacher quality to the detriment of teacher innovation. It's time for a course correction. Our students are depending on us. Our leaders are depending on us. A pivotal year lies ahead. Let's use this summer to unite and find innovative ways to ensure every student has access to a teacher. 🚨 New: "Leveling the Landscape: An Analysis of K-12 Funding Inequities Within Metro Areas" 📊 I worked with with my Bellwether colleagues Bonnie O'Keefe and Biko McMillan to explore K-12 funding disparities within our nation's largest metro areas, representing 123 metros across 38 states. Our research reveals significant inequities where districts in affluent communities often benefit from much higher local revenue per pupil compared to less affluent districts within the same metro area. These disparities are largely driven by economic segregation and variations in property wealth – disparities that are compounded by state policies that determine how district lines are drawn and how local funds flow to school systems. Achieving equal funding between affluent and less affluent districts would require an additional $26 billion annually in state funding. Funding public schools in these metros *equitably* – ensuring that students with additional learning needs receive *more* funding to address those needs – would cost much more. This report provides valuable insights for policymakers aiming to address and mitigate funding inequities in public education.
