An eye-opening and thought-provoking article on the breadth and current realities of federal-to-state land grants. State land management agencies across the United States continue to be the most powerful offices generating billions of dollars from extractive industries to support public institutions that Indigenous Peoples do not have ready access to, despite the lineal history of dispossession. Such well researched articles and personal stories invite us to reconsider how we relate to, and make use of, the lands we inhabit and manage, and who its primary beneficiaries should be. From the article: "Though it’s a complicated and arduous process changing laws and working with state agencies, universities regularly do it. In 2022, the 14 land-grant universities profiled in this story spent a combined $4.6 million on lobbying on issues ranging from agriculture to defense. All lobbied to influence the federal budget and appropriations." https://lnkd.in/eWmUVf_2

3️⃣ Where do we go now? The massive, less focused effort of the federal government reduced educational inequality, but did not finish the recovery. It is now up to states to drive local efforts hyper-focused on academic interventions. As reported in the The Wall Street Journal, "The overall impact of the federal money was modest, and the remaining dollars won’t be enough to get students back to where they were before the pandemic, the researchers projected. The findings come as the money is running out and some schools are cutting academic-recovery programs." “The pandemic dollars helped with recovery, but the recovery won’t be done,” said Tom Kane. States need to take up the baton with academic catch-up efforts, such as tutoring and summer learning, and continue to focus on lowering absenteeism. https://lnkd.in/eHx6VBY6 Image: The Wall Street Journal

A Sham Process: Gov. Hochul's Designating the Rockefeller Institute to Review of the Foundation Aid Formula "This disingenuous proposal does no more than delegate the Rockefeller Institute to prepare the governor’s education budget proposal for 2025-2026. The effort may tweak the current formula to meet the governor’s budget goals, but it will certainly not be an objective attempt to “ascertain the actual cost of providing a sound basic education” and ensure that “every school [will] have the resources necessary for providing the opportunity for a sound basic education,” as is required by the state constitution and the Court of Appeals’ ruling in CFE v. State of New York." Read more from the Center for Educational Equity's recent statement: https://lnkd.in/em8YB9cd #SBE4all
