What great week with the K2 Management team at #WindEnergyHamburg 2024! The global offshore wind industry is just buzzing with progress. The UK is making waves in floating wind, with the stand out project being #Scotland's Green Volt (Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy JV) now having secured all planning approvals and a CfD - a fantastic milestone! And let's not forget the exciting Celtic Sea plans for 4.5GW, set to be awarded next year. We're well on our way to smashing the #UK's 5GW floating wind goal by 2030! #Ireland's wind sector is also soaring; RESS4 recently procured more than 2GW of onshore projects and we will see 900MW progressing offshore in 2025 through ORESS2.1! While we've got some hurdles to overcome, like boosting port infrastructure and supply chains for both jurisdictions, the future of offshore wind looks incredibly bright. Here's to powering ahead with clean energy!

Yesterday, together with my dear colleague Tim Meyerjürgens I had the honor to participate at a high-level event on offshore energy ‘Delivering offshore energy to all’ organized by the Belgian Presidency of the Council 2024 @eu2024be in Bruges. Here relevant offshore stakeholders, representatives from 27 EU national ministries and the European Commission met, addressing existing barriers and identifying opportunities for the development of offshore renewables and the connection to onshore consumption centres. It was an excellent opportunity to be able to share our insights and recommendations for financing, market design and supply chain for offshore grid infrastructure, which were outlined in our latest expert paper 'Unlocking the Potential of the North Seas', a collaboration with eleven TSOs from nine #NorthSea countries. 📣 Funding for a new phase of the SIF BLADE project, which is researching how offshore wind farms provide restoration services to the onshore grid, has been announced! 👏   This will allow offshore wind to offer a vital ancillary service, traditionally provided by fossil fuel-heavy generation, to help maintain the resilience of the network and the decarbonisation of the electricity sector. Building on the positive findings of the first two phases of the project, this new phase aims to resolve the commercial and technical unknowns of bringing these technologies to market. This project combines two world-leading R&D programmes: Ofgem's Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and the Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA). This will create a powerful consortium, including ScottishPower Networks Transmission, SSEN Transmission , National Grid ESO, University of Strathclyde, TNEI and the Carbon Trust representing the OWA developers: EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, Equinor, Ørsted, RWE, ScottishPower Renewables, Shell, SSE Renewables, TotalEnergies and Vattenfall, as well as two new developer partners bp and OW Ocean Winds. OWIC was established in 2013 as a joint government-industry forum to drive forward the UK’s renewable energy targets. 𝗨𝗦 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗶𝘁 𝟭𝟰 𝗚𝗪 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬, 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝟯𝟬 𝗚𝗪 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 – 𝗔𝗖𝗣 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 The American Clean Power Association (ACP) has projected there will be approximately 14 GW of #offshorewind capacity deployed by 2030, falling short of the 30 GW goal set by the Biden Administration in 2021. ACP’s recent report also outlines USD 65 billion (approximately EUR 60 billion) in investments and 56,000 jobs in the US offshore wind sector by 2030. According to ACP, market analysts forecast that there will be 14 GW of offshore wind capacity deployed by 2030, 30 GW by 2033, and 40 GW online by 2035. There are currently 12 GW of projects with active offtake agreements, including 4 GW under active construction at Vineyard Wind, Revolution Wind, and Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, said ACP in its 2024 Offshore Wind Market Report. ⭐️NUMBER OF THE WEEK⭐️ 🇪🇺The European Commission approved the acquisition of joint control of EEW Offshore Wind EU by EEW Holding GmbH, both of #Germany, and Sumitomo of #Japan. 🌍In recent years, the #energy market in #Europe has undergone significant change, such as a major growth in the #renewableenergy sector and numerous large-scale #offshorewind projects. "Creating an economically sustainable offshore wind market requires a whole of industry approach" It was great to have Venterra Group's Jamie MacDonald contributing to today's panel discussion on "Fixed Bottom Wind Expansion" at the EIC (Energy Industries Council) conference in Aberdeen. Key issues covered included how demand for vessels and components will continue to outstrip supply over the next 10 years, as wind is forecast to supply one third of global electricity by 2050, with 22% coming from fixed bottom offshore wind.
