This should be a thing for every sports broadcast. Last Thursday night (Thanksgiving night), the halftime of the Packers vs Dolphins game wasn’t just a bunch of obvious analysis and commercials (though there was that). NBC aired a 55-minute story on Dolphins’ fullback Alec Ingold. He grew up a huge Packers fan and was playing his first ever game in Lambeau Field. But the story was deeper. It was about Alec’s adoption. It was about the things he’s doing now to raise adoption awareness. Millions of us are sports fans. We root for teams and certain players. But sports leagues should take every minute they can to share the stories of people on (and off) the field. Storytelling can be marketing for sure, but it can go beyond that. It connects humans to other humans they don’t know. It gives people a reason to invest time. I’m not a Dolphins fan, but from now on when I hear Alec Ingold’s name, I’ll think about his story. I’ll think about adoption. I’ll think about what I can do to make a small impact on the world. And that wouldn’t be possible if NBC had just numbed its viewers with more pointless analysis, coach speak, or more truck/prescription/beer/whatever commercials. #marketing #storytelling https://lnkd.in/eXZZm_dk

Tyson v Paul may have ended in an anticlimax, but the real victory was for women in boxing, with millions in combined earnings and pay-per-view buys. (I need to see Taylor v Serrano 3.. without the headbutts) The Streaming Shift.. Netflix’s recent push into live events, like WWE specials and their "Game Day" NFL coverage, signals a shake-up. If they expand further into broadcasting live sports, it could massively challenge traditional pay-per-view by offering subscribers a seamless way to watch live sports alongside their favourite shows. Why This Matters.. Platforms like Netflix entering the live sports space could disrupt the PPV model with more affordable, bundled options that appeal to a wider audience. With every shake-up comes opportunity.. Let’s see what that means for my friends in that space, especially the voice acting community. Maybe it’s time to start commentating 🎙️😉✨ This shift could redefine how we watch sports, paving the way for diverse headliners and make high-profile / unconventional events even more accessible. Thoughts? (Ps Serrano has so much heart 👊🏾)

Dear NFL - you need to fix this sooner rather than later... Referees are going to be your downfall. People want to watch football, not flags, and replays, and conferences, and guys looking at a tiny monitor, and annoucements. Yes, there needs to be rules enforcement, but why do you need to put the refs on TV? Flag...TV/stadium announcer or graphic says 'Holding on 75'...on to the next play. Why do I need the ref to tell me this info? If I'm a broadcaster I'm telling my producer to stop showing the refs - I pay my talent millions, have the most valuable TV property in the U.S., and I spend 20% of the broadcast showing people no one wants to see. Tennis has it right, automatic line calls have made the product infinitely better and guess what, no one misses players whining to the official about someone making a bad call. The NBA and NFL have gone the other way, giving the refs and replay officials more airtime only makes them want - you guessed it - even more airtime. Human nature, reality TV, and professional wrestling prove this, once you make someone a character in an event, they think they should be a bigger character in that event. So, WT Faulk do we do? Cut them off now, use their audio call if you need it, but use the technology we have to reduce their role, let the players and game be the product and the refs will go back to being a minor inconvenience rather than a constant burden. #NFL #TV #TVSports #Referee #Sports #Replay #Ratings #Football #Broadcasting
