We filed a class action lawsuit today on behalf of Columbia students who have been displaced from campus because the school could not guarantee their safety. The complaint is here: https://lnkd.in/gmRvWwWZ. All Columbia students deserve the right to safely complete this semester in person with the rest of the student body, free from harassment and discrimination. Unfortunately, our suit alleges that the university has failed to secure the safety of its students, particularly its Jewish students, who have been subject to harassment and threats from a small group of people in the protests inciting violence. It is the university's responsibility to ensure all students feel safe, welcomed and supported on campus. Our suit alleges it needs to enforce its policies and let students feel free to study, take finals and otherwise be students without worrying they will be assaulted. We are proceeding on a breach of contract theory and are seeking immediate injunctive relief.
Congratulations Edelson PC on the suit. And a well written and meritorious complaint. I am a Columbia Law grad and this episode is incredibly upsetting. As the complaint eloquently sets out, the protestors have every right to voice their views about Israel, how the war against Hamas is being waged, etc. But when these individuals openly support Hamas, encourage the killing of Israelis (Jews and non Jews alike), that is not speech. That is just evil. And for the University to tolerate it, at least for a period of time, is outrageous.
Good work. At Yale, self-appointed ideological “marshals” are giving themselves authority to determine who may and may not enter university property and enforcing “checkpoints” based on sworn fealty to their agenda. This behavior should be deeply concerning to all of us regardless of one’s political views. If such behavior is permitted in one context it will continue in countless others.
I support this. If it would be helpful to have local counsel please reach out.
Excellent complaint. You guys are making a real difference. Hope many will follow your great example.
