A little #TBT, construction style. The Hoover Dam project. As the largest concrete structure ever imagined (at the time), the Boulder Dam as it was called was officially authorized in 1928. As you can imagine, the project was a first-of-its-kind in many different ways. Here are just a few stats on the magnitude of the effort. ONE model city built just as the HQ. FIVE years to construct. SIX different contractors. ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY degree peak temperatures. FIVE THOUSAND, TWO HUNDRED plus craft a peak. ONE HUNDRED & TWELVE confirmed dead in construction accidents, 96 of which happened on the site itself. Also, that doesn't include any deaths that resulted from pneumonia (reportedly 42 more). And one of the recorded deaths was simply a visitor to the site. It is easy sometimes to complain, or at least get annoyed by the safety rules and regulations that "hamper" or "slow" production. But when you're talking about over 100 lives, at the end of the day it's worth it. I've taken the Dam tour twice, and I would highly recommend it. [Project] Menard UK collaborated with TD Jagger Ltd to conduct ground improvement works beneath the foundations and floor slab of the new Seabrook Crisp factory extension. Key information:   📍 Location: United Kingdom   ⚙️ Technique: Controlled Modulus Columns   📅 Year: 2024    🏭 Ground Conditions :   Initial investigations revealed that the site was constructed over natural clays. At the request of Menard UK, additional CPT were carried out across the entire site to precisely map the variations in different layers and inform the detailed CMC design.  ⚙️ Why Controlled Modulus Columns?    To support the foundations and floor slab of the extension, Menard UK used Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs). And since we're already talking depth of seal, lets look at why it is so difficult to create with diagonal openings. Within a solid tilt up concrete wall, depth of seal with proper annular space is not terribly difficult to create as you have the entire opening to work with. But say the pipe is a few degrees off of the cored opening and create point of contact or zero annular space? What does that look like? And what about gyp walls? How do we treat that?
