💫 Today marked the concluding event of the Vienna Design Week, and I would like to share a bit about how the event was organized and what took place. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is Austrian largest design festival with a variety of venues throughout Vienna. Beyond the preoccupation with the design of products, it poses the question of what role the work of designers plays for coexistence in the city and worldwide. The main focus was on the use of secondary/recycling materials. This theme was present in almost all the events Main key activities included: 🔹 Exhibitions  Various galleries and museums in the city hosted exhibitions of contemporary designers' works, both local and international. Special attention was drawn to installations that combined art and technology. 🔹 Lectures and Seminars  Renowned designers and experts shared their thoughts on the future of design, sustainable development, and innovations. Many events took the form of open discussions, allowing participants to ask questions and exchange opinions. 🔹 Workshops Practical sessions were organized where participants could try their hand at various areas of design—from creating interior items to graphic design. 🔹 Urban Tours of Insider Locations The program of these specially compiled professional tours is designed to appeal just as much to people interested in culture as to architects. The exchange between international colleagues and tour participants is a significant aspect of the choreography of each tour 🔹Urban Food & Design\ The City as a Resource This year’s edition of Urban Food & Design, the format jointly presented by the Vienna Business Agency and the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, is addressing the subject of innovating with recyclable materials. How can the city’s previously unused resources – including those generated by food production – be developed into new materials for architecture and design. And how can these be appropriately employed in the gastronomy and hospitality sector All events were marked on a map with dates and locations. I couldn’t attend everything, but in future posts, I will showcase what I’d really liked and particularly enjoyed. Lastly, I can say that this festival is definitely not just about furniture exhibitions, it's more about the dialogue between modern technologies, design, designers, and society

The Individual Perception of Time and Urban Design: A New Perspective Time, though intangible and abstract, profoundly influences human experience, and urban design plays a crucial role in shaping how we perceive it. Our sensory environments and the spaces we inhabit interact with time perception in powerful ways. Even in the absence of direct sensory stimuli, humans perceive time through the mental patterns shaped by their surroundings (Le Poidevin, 2009). Urban spaces, with their rhythms and dynamics, have the ability to alter our sense of time. Fries' concept of time perception—where attention to change and the integration of stimuli define our experience of duration, simultaneity, and succession—can be directly linked to the design of urban environments. Streets filled with diverse, stimulating, and harmonious features tend to make time feel shorter, whereas monotonous, uninviting spaces can stretch time, leading to feelings of boredom or discomfort (Roeckelein, 2000). In urban design, this means that spaces enriched with variety, novelty, and interaction foster a positive perception of time, making moments feel meaningful and vibrant. Conversely, poorly designed spaces—lacking diversity, functionality, or visual appeal—may amplify feelings of stagnation and elongate the perception of time, contributing to stress or discomfort. As James (1892) suggested, a time filled with diverse and exciting experiences feels short-lived, while monotonous periods seem enduring. Applying this principle to urban design, the richness and quality of an environment can either enhance or diminish an individual’s temporal experience. Whether it's a lively city square full of engaging activity or a well-designed pedestrian street with varied sensory stimuli, urban spaces can create the perception of "happy hours" where time flies. This research underscores the profound relationship between urban design and the human perception of time, highlighting the need for environments that not only function well but also evoke positive emotions and an enjoyable sense of time. The ultimate goal of urban design should be to create spaces that resonate with human emotions, making time spent in cities enriching and uplifting. Which street would you prefer to walk on? A busy business district with towering buildings or a human-scale design focused on comfort and accessibility? One trend that’s captured my attention is "adaptive reuse"—the art of breathing new life into old buildings. It’s not just sustainable; it’s a nod to history, blending heritage with modern needs.  Another big shift? "Biophilic design". Incorporating nature into urban spaces isn’t just a trend; it’s a necessity. Studies show that green spaces enhance mental health and productivity—a win-win for both design and end-users.  Lastly, "smart and flexible spaces" are taking center stage. With hybrid work and dynamic lifestyles, spaces need to adapt. Designs that prioritize modularity and technology are leading the way.  But here’s the question I’ve been pondering: How do we balance aesthetics, sustainability, and functionality without compromising one for the other?
