Introducing the #EMIGRA Conservation & Cultural Research Fellows! Building on over 15 years of research, the Especies Migratorias y Gobernanza de sus Ambientes (“Equitable Governance of Migratory Species and their Habitats” or EMIGRA) project has entered a phase of research that seeks to better understand the social, environmental and governance interactions related to migratory species in North America. To support this effort, the team has selected 12 fellows to conduct research related to migratory species in ten unique regions across North America. The researchers hope to learn about the various ways local, rural and Indigenous communities may interact with, perceive or value migratory species and the land they all depend on, and the extent to which they have been included in past conservation efforts. ‘By 2030, the Chebera Churchura National Park will be recognized as one of Africa’s top protected areas through the effective and collaborative management of its natural and cultural heritage, and the sustained flow of benefits to affected communities at all levels.’ That is a vision statement jointly formulated by the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), wolaita sodo university, the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute, and other key actors working on the conservation of the national park. In line with this vision, the GIZ-implemented project Conservation and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Ethiopia: Biodiversity supported the development of the park's General Management Plan(GMP). The GMP sets out operational goals, guiding infrastructure development and maintenance plans, ensuring sustained benefits to local communities, developing cultural heritage features, and enhancing income generation opportunities. By following the GMP, the park can address management infrastructure needs, protect cultural heritage features, and generate income effectively. Whether they are temporary or reclaimed habitats, quarries can comprise a diverse range of ecosystems. It is this diversity that can provide vital food, water, and breeding sites for a variety of bird species. Be it flocks of sand martins nesting in sandbanks, or avocets and other waders walking our wetland shorelines, or even falcons circling above. With World Migratory Bird Day celebrated on 11 May, we reflect on the importance of quarries in helping to support these long-distance travelers. To ensure there are always forms of habitat to support biodiversity, Heidelberg Materials has committed to designating a minimum of 15% space within all our active quarries to nature. The public organizations of Kazakhstan and other countries, together with government agencies and international organizations, met at the Forum on May 29-31, 2024 in order to save Lake Balkhash. As the result of the Forum, it was decided to create a Corporate Fund to restore the ecosystem and preserve the lake and biodiversity. In the photo - the last tigers of the Balkhash region (Turan tiger was the same tiger that fought in the gladiatorial arenas. Turan is the ancient name of the lowlands of Central Asia. Wild tigers have completely disappeared from the region since the late 1940s, due to poaching, and the loss of key floodplain forests and coastal habitats. 🌳🎤 This is one of the biggest challenge of our time: Restoring forests on a large scale while involving local communities. Today, there are 900 million hectares of land worldwide awaiting restoration, with 1/6 of them in Brazil. However, at the current pace, only 5% of the UN's restoration goal for 2030 will be achieved. THE QUESTION IS: "can we combine scale with co-benefits, benefiting both biodiversity and people?" I believe that high-quality restoration projects are the answer. These projects not only address the scale of the challenge but also bring benefits to both biodiversity and local communities. More than 1️⃣2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ people have already signed up for our upcoming webinar. Today, the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area - KAZA TFCA joins the world in commemorating World Wetlands Day under the theme, "Preserving Vital Ecosystems for Human Wellbeing". Currently, KAZA has three (3) wetlands designated as of international significance/Ramsar Sites namely: 1.      Okavango Delta- One of the world's largest inland water systems and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with headwaters that start in Angola's western highlands and have tributaries that join to form the Cubango River, flowing into Namibia as the Kavango River and finally entering Botswana as the Okavango River. 2.      Bwabwata – Okavango National Park – which consists of the lower Okavango River and part of the Okavango Delta Panhandle. 3.      Victoria Falls National Park - a biodiversity hotspot on the Zimbabwean side of the Victoria Falls- a UNESCO World Heritage Site and natural wonder of the world. KAZA is home to different wetland types including major rivers like the Zambezi and Okavango floodplains, swamps, and dambos which provide various socio-economic goods and services for people and biodiversity.
