Unsurprisingly, companies are finding that “sustainability is hard”. The problem with signing up to climate goals is that organisations like SBTi needed critical mass, so for many it was a case of sign up now and work out the details later. But SBTi, unlike some others, requires companies to submit annual reports that demonstrate year on year carbon reductions once they have committed to their goals. If you can’t do that, you’re out. Because getting to Net Zero (or anything remotely like it) requires MASSIVE reductions in GHG emissions which have to start now and can only be realised through systemic changes in how companies operate. There are no winners here. One company declaring “success” by hitting their interim climate goals (or furiously offsetting them) is not actually changing the world on their own. The problem will still exist while they congratulate themselves on their sustainability achievements. Unless we all work together this is not going to end well for any of us. This has nothing to do with SBTi standards and whether you agree with them or not, or how we measure Scope 3 emissions and report on them. It’s just common sense. We are still emitting way too many GHGs every year, adding to what’s already in the atmosphere. We know that’s causing global warming, which is changing our climate, which is exacerbating inequalities, causing more extreme weather events and literally killing people. So the common sense answer is to stop emitting GHGs and give the human race a fighting chance of survival. But we just continue BAU because that makes money, which keeps the analysts happy, makes the investors happy which raises the valuation, which improves the stock price, which makes the economy grow. Quarterly economic gains being made now in exchange for long term environmental disaster. I know what you’re thinking: in the words of Father Ted “Careful now. Down with that sort of thing”. We don’t want to upset anyone do we? Net zero targets are totally meaningless if you have absolutely no idea where to start, where you’re going or how to get there. Yet we work in technology and we talk about Moonshot Thinking when it comes to setting audacious goals for innovation. Missions to Mars, autonomous fleets of vehicles, sure. Climate change? Ooh that’s a hard one. “We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” — President John F. Kennedy Aim for 10X, not 10% improvement. Fall in love with the problem, not the technology. Tackle the hardest part of the problem first, not the easiest thing. Fail fast but learn from it. Shift your perspective. Take the long term view. Climate change is not solved by empty commitments or carbon accounting. It needs passion, innovation and determination - but most of all it needs action. We choose to do this not because it is easy but because it is hard.

👏👏👏👏 SBTI One only has to look at P&Gs “net zero transition plan” to see it for the complete and utter greenwash that it is - full of emissions reductions from dodgy “green electricity” certificates which have long been discredited as lacking additionality, and “nature based” solutions aka dodgy offsets. A lot of folks take potshots at Science Based Targets initiative because it isn’t perfectly aligned with the decarbonisation pathways, or it doesn’t fully cover all sustainability issues or it is weak on “triple materiality”, and I have to say I think those folks have entirely missed the point… the great service that SBTI are doing is to systematically eliminate the greenwashing and manipulation underpinning many corporate disclosures and transition plans… as a professional with three decades working in this field let me emphasize the importance of that… Now what we need to happen is for consumers and investors and supermarket bosses to write to P&G, and the others, and ask them why they are no longer are adhering to SBTI.

I guess this #SBTi development is a perfect example why a '𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬" approach is highly questionable. Such 'design faults' could and should be avoided ( or at least discovered earlier...) Both corporate and politicians agree guilty of them ! Sophie Robinson-Tillett, thank you for alerting us & sharing your views!
