Juneteenth is an annual observance on June 19 to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. This day is an opportunity for people to celebrate freedom and equal rights in the United States. On June 19, 1865, freedom finally came for the 250,000 enslaved people of Texas. That day, which would become known as Juneteenth, the Army arrived to enforce what had already been the law of the land for two and a half years — the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we recognize that Juneteenth not only marks the end of America’s original sin of slavery but also the beginning of the work at the heart and soul of our Nation: making the promise of America real for every American. 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗹𝘀 The Juneteenth flag consists of a rectangle. The lower part of the rectangle is red and the upper part is blue and it has a solid white, five-pointed star at its center. The star is surrounded by a white outline of a 12-pointed star. The Juneteenth flag is often displayed with the United States flag to symbolize that slavery is illegal. In Texas and some other southern states, the traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda. This variety of cream soda is a sweet, soft drink flavored with orange and lemon oils and vanilla. What Juneteenth lessons still apply to our lives today?🤔 - - - - Juneteenth marks the day that word got to the remaining slaves and their owners in the United States that all people that had previously been enslaved were now free! The emancipation proclamation that granted this freedom was issued on January 1, 1863 whereas Juneteenth wasn’t until June 19th, 1865. That’s 2 and a half years of freedom that the final slaves did not get to experience, simply because they didn’t know. There were absolutely those who knew those slaves were free but simply didn’t inform them to use them to their advantage until the absolute final minute. There is a silver lining to this unfortunate history in that it gives us all lessons that we can live by today: 1. Oftentimes, people recognize opportunities (that are uniquely for you) long before you do. 2. Some individuals will cast a shadow over your greatness in order to benefit from it. 3. Just because you don’t recognize your power/excellence/greatness does not mean that you don’t possess it. 4. Don’t count on people to proactively tell you what you need to know; ask questions, research, and investigate. 5. Just because you don’t see it today does NOT mean that your ultimate success isn’t already in motion!
