On the sidelines of #ClimateWeekNYC this week, 14 of the world's major banks pledged their support to triple global #nuclear energy capacity by 2050, a goal set by countries at COP28. Hopefully this, coupled with lowering interest rates, will lead to some new nuclear power projects getting under contract and being financed.

This great visualization shows the volume of all existing #nuclear waste, categorized by its level of hazardousness and disposal requirements, based on data from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Today, nuclear provides about 10% of global #electricity generation and will probably grow in the global energy mix as it is among the safest and cleanest sources of electricity, making it a critical part of the clean #energy #transition to 1.5°C. Interesting insights, indeed. Another important isight is that prolonging existing nuclear, if safe and accepted, is a no-brainer: big decrease of total system costs (probalby biggest cost decrease you can achieve, should check more in detail)

Fascinating graph in new Elia Group (Belgian TSO) report. Combinations of new #nuclear & far offshore #wind builds and resulting total system cost (€/MWh) - yes, incl. balancing, grid etc. Stress test: wind or nuclear costs increase over reference. More wind by and large the safer/cheaper strategy. Can't wait to see how this will get interpreted. https://lnkd.in/enSvfizH

This is similar to the situation in Ontario, except substitute the natural gas industry for the coal industry. That being said, the Canadian nuclear power industry also seems to have the ears of the current Ontario government, so Ontarians are simultaneously faced with two negative factors thanks to industry lobbying efforts! Self-interest wins, the environment and taxpayers lose. #NuclearPower

In our recent Fall Seasonal outlook, Wood Mackenzie’s MISO analysts did a deep dive into upcoming nuclear outages. The team highlighted five nuclear units, totaling over 8 GWs of capacity. Current schedules show that from October 7th – 21st, four of these units will be out indicating higher risks for congestion. By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft.
