"You are completely exposed and on your own if anything goes wrong, entirely reliant on natural forces outside of your control, and your instincts. This is why a strong, intuitive understanding of the wind and weather conditions is crucial — [as is also the case] in my professional role as a Solar Engineer, where open mindedness and good judgement in risk-taking are also crucial." Thomas Dodamead, Lead Solar Engineer in our San Diego office, has been kiteboarding for eight years and loves the exhilaration and way of life that comes with it. His passion for this sport and his work are both rooted in a deep appreciation for the intricate relationship between humans and the environment. We're continuing to share employees' passion for sports (energy) past the Olympic Games — and encouraging YOU to #BecomeTheEnergy that moves you!

1 gigawatt (GW). Few people appreciate how much power this is. To fully understand this unit, we must first visualize its immensity. You’ve probably seen the news: Europe’s largest solar farm has 0.6 GW peak capacity (Leipzig, Germany). UK’s current operational BESS capacity is 4.6 GW (June 2024). China added 301 GW of renewable capacity in 2023. … But how much power is 1 GW, really? Let’s use an example: The Energy Olympics Paris 2024 showcased some amazing feats of human performance. Not least of which were the Olympic rowers. A top Olympic rower generates about 500 watts. Now let’s imagine Olympic rowers power your home. How many would you need? A washing machine uses about 500 watts during its cycle. 1 Olympian. A typical toaster uses 1000 watts. 2 more Olympians. Fancy a tea? 3 more are required to run a kettle. You would need a full team laboring at full-race speed. That’s between 5-10 rowers to power one average home in Germany. Day after day. Now, let's think bigger. Much bigger. One gigawatt is 1 billion watts. This is enough power for a medium-sized city. i.e., ~400,000 to 800,000 German homes. To reach 1 GW, we'd need to mobilize 2 million Olympic rowers. That’s as if the entire population of Vienna started rowing… at an Olympic pace. After one hour, ~900 million calories would be burnt. That’s equal to 9 million bananas. It would take 44 fully loaded trucks to deliver them. Hour after hour. So, how can we tackle humanity’s thirst for power? The answer is where we started. Large-scale renewables roll-out. A single large wind turbine can generate 6 MW. That's like 12,000 rowers. The largest wind farms in the world today can have more than 1 GW capacity. This shows the immense scale of our energy needs and production. It highlights why renewable sources like wind and solar are so crucial. Next time you boil the kettle, imagine 3 Olympians rowing for you. --- Enjoy this? ♻️ Repost it to your network and follow Joseph Ciccone for more. Image credit: i0.wp

The Evacuator Fire-proof Collective Escape/Evacuation Descent System Guarantees A Simple and Fast Escape From Heights Within 10 Seconds!
The Evacuator World Wide B.V. fire-proof and panic-proof escape/evacuation descent systems ready for the installation in Vestas V164 offshore wind turbines on request of Parkwind JERA Co., Inc. on the Belgium North Sea. Only with the Evacuator escape/evacuation descent system wind technicians have a fair chance to survive a fire or acute health problem that occurs in the nacelle/hub. Due to pre-installation and permanently fixing the steel cables directly at the escape hatches the Evacuator escape/evacuation descent system provides a simple and fast escape/evacuation within 10 seconds out of the nacelle for multiple wind technicians at the same time, it is the worlds only Click On and Go descent system which guarantees that all lifesaving equipment is already there where the technicians need it, which is of paramount importance when every second counts during a fire or fast developing smoke inside the nacelle. Up to Max. 8 technicians are allowed to connect/Click On and descent at the same with a maximum load of 282 Kg connecting on each steel cable. After connecting onto one of the steel cables it cannot be used wrongly, human mistakes are simply not possible during use thanks to clever design. The Evacuator E140/165 is equipped with 2 steel cables which work completely independent from each other, but both steel cables are also allowed to be used at the same time with a Max load of 564 Kg at the same time on the system. Needs NO electricity, Lifespan of more than 30 years thanks to clever engineering and clever maintenance programme (on side), during its entire life it does never need to be taken out of the wind turbine. The Evacuator escape descent system can simply be re-used and re-installed in the next wind turbine in case the current wind turbine has reached its lifespan. Does not need expensive or complicated annual training but training models are available for educational and practical (E)-learning purposes. All other descent devices (also the personal descender), available on the global market, are not designed to use during time critical panic situations and not safe to use in dangerous environments such as fire and hot toxic smoke spreading rapidly fast within seconds inside the nacelle/hub of the wind turbine, all other devices are rescue devices where time plays not a crucial role, rescue is a completely different thing compared to escape/evacuation. The Evacuator system is the only descent system in the world that brings compliance to official safety standards in the wind industry. Manufactured in the Netherlands, Globally patented. Certified by the German testing and certification institute DEKRA Germany, certified according EN341-D, in compliance with ANSI and CSA.
