From specialist to generalist and back again. 20 years is a long time to be in one company. For years, it was completely fulfilling and flourished beyond expectation but ultimately, change touches everything and everyone. This is a simple tale of finding & following change. When I started my career, I wanted to be water treatment process specialist. I was sure of it. Because that’s how you get to design many great treatment facilities to eliminate the pollution in the environment and provide clean drinking water to the world. I discovered very quickly that the process design work I wanted to be an expert in only happened during a relatively brief part of the entire project. I looked ahead at the possible pathways at the time and realized I had to be good at something else! And that set me off on a journey where I got involved in every field in Water that I could get my hands on. In the years that follow, I designed, studied, planned & managed water projects in almost every part of Singapore’s world-class, innovation-driven water system. During this time I also held different roles in technology management, talent development and business operations. All these were possible because I was in a great company with a great people culture. However, before I knew it, I had moved far away from being a specialist… to my “horror”, I had become a generalist! I had to take a hard look at things. What was I actually good at and enjoyed the most? Can I take these forward? I took years to process this in my head, but in the end the answers were surprisingly clear. There was a common thread through everything I was excited to do. I really enjoyed building new capacity from innovations, and I enjoyed building people’s capacity even more. My roles in technology and talent showed me that the real power of innovation is in sustaining business growth and it achieves that by growing people. As I reflected at the time how to create impact using this insight, I decided that I needed to do something different if the goal was to reach as many people as possible. That’s when I knew it was time to close the chapter on that 20-year long career. *** Cut to today: I recently had some time to look forward again while doing some solo travel in Tokyo. For a few years, I’ve allowed myself time for experimentation and exploration. They were meant to take me somewhere and now is the time to be clear where that is. Just like at the start of my career, I found myself committing to being a specialist once again - to focus on helping people advance climate-tech innovations. But this time, it feels different. This time, I’m going to specialize by embracing every bit of the generalist in me - to build capacity for business & people! When you look ahead on your journey, are you evolving to become a specialist or a generalist? #careerchange #specialist #generalist #FreeingEngineering

~6 weeks ago, I posted a Sustainability Coordinator position on LinkedIn. We received ~100 applicants in 48 hours. The post was viewed 22,023 times, reposted 42 times. Clearly, folks want to work in #sustainability. Since then, I have given +10 informational interviews to brave LinkedIn messengers who wrote me to say: "I want to pursue a career in sustainability. Do you have any advice?" They usually ask: - How did you get to where you are today? - What do you do on a day-to-day basis? - What do you like about your job? - How can I break into this field? I'll unpack all of these questions (and more) with Anita Kelava and the Voiz Academy next Thursday, March 7th at 9am (Pacific). I hope you'll join me!
