What is the ‘problem’ in your team? Often, problems in team effectiveness are blamed on interpersonal relationships and people not getting on. When we try to fix team performance issues, we start with trying to fix interpersonal relationships. However, Hackman and Wageman (2005) suggest that often, interpersonal problems are actually a symptom of poor performance and not a cause. Therefore, fixing the functionality of the team may be a better place to start than with relationships. There is quite a bit of empirical work to support this.
